In 1920s developer John Ladd decided to build what would become one of Gainesville’s first shopping malls on then undeveloped land between US 1/2 mile west of that city’s center and State Road 55/Upson Creek just southwest of downtown Gainesville; this mall would be known as Ladd Center for Commerce & Industry after its developer, John Ladd Sr., sonof founder John Ladd Jr.. Today’s Foley Mall property still contains original portions including entrances off SR55 near Foley Square before Upson Creek merged with US1 south next to Hernando High School – today known as University Avenue Shoppingcenter; I-4 Exit 84 leads northeast into Foley square past Foley Square onto University Avenue where FDLE now patrols during daytime hours while also hosting several stores inside former Hernando Elementary School building prior to its demolition in 2013 due to fire code violations.. The development also included an airport terminal adjacent to what is nowMRTC Airport which served primarily charter service beginning in 1948 when nearby Clearwater International Airport became available following purchase by Gulfstream Airlines for $15 million dollars USD.. The original airport terminal was demolished circa 1978 but structural remnants remain including an air traffic control tower parts have been rebuilt onsite adjacent to MRTC Airport today serving as a Visitor Information Centre visitors can access via Google Maps aerial view or walkable tour starting at SR 55 foot path leading northeast towards I-4 exit 84
