Bartow, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,547 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded by J.D. Bartow on October 20, 1875 as a result of the railroad construction nearby and his purchase of 6 blocks of land from the Gulf and Western Railroad Company for $1,000. The first post office in Bartow was established on November 3, 1875. The original name for the town was "Ft Worth" but it was changed to "Bartow" after J.D.'s son-in-law John Worthy Bartow became its first mayor in 1902. In 1906, Fenton Aiken opened a general store across from Fort Myers Beach; this store would become one of the largest in Florida and eventually close its doors in 1978 due to competition from Walmart Supercenter located just east of BartOW on I-95/I-15 (now State Road 8). In 1916 when Jacksonville lost its bid for Cityhood because it did not meet certain requirements including having a municipally owned water system (Jacksonville had already been incorporated as an unincorporated community), residents voted to secede from Jacksonville and form their own municipality known as Lakeland which still exists today within Jacksonville limits according to the 2010 Census – making Bartow one of only two towns ever seceded from Jacksonville proper! On December 5th 1907 J D Bartholomew married Maud Humphrey at First Baptist Church located just north east of town off SR 11 between US 41 & SR 8. After becoming engaged they took a trip down south where they stopped at Tallahassee before traveling back home via train to Ft Worth before getting married there on January 12th 1908 at First Baptist Church again officiating by Rev E G Whitehead who newly moved into Ft Worth from Mobile Alabama with his family following Mrs Bartholomew’s arrival there that year! Maud worked various odd jobs until she started working at NWT Steel Works right outside our borders during World War II helping out with all aspects related to production including loading and unloading planes while being open late into nights!!! She retired in 1984 after many years!!
