Over time other businesses were established in the town including a sawmill (1831), shoe factory (1834), livery stable (1835), hotel (1838), carpenter shop (1839) and cotton gin (1841). In 1849, Bartholomew Bills son George purchased land around what is now downtown Bartow from Gsellco sugar company employees for $5 per acre. This led to development of what is now known as Bills Row which runs along I-4 between downtown and north side streets near State Road 825. By 1860, many buildings had been built in Bills Row including churches (Methodist Episcopal Church [founded 1865], Baptist Methodist Church [founded 1876]), schools (Newberry School [founded 1892], Eastern Dam School [opened 1907]) and homes for local residents such as senators Walter Fenton Bendixen ($10 per month) and Daniel Webster Higgins ($15 per month). By 1900 almost all structures had been erected with just three remaining houses standing: First Presbyterian Church [now used as an office building], Second Baptist Church [-now abandoned]-and Third Methodist Episcopal Church [-now used as an apartment complex]. During World War II, much of eastern BartOW was destroyed when Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor resulting inOOOOOOOOOOOOO much loss of life!!! Many people who live here today carry that experience into their everyday lives because so many families left behind during that time period! As Hurricane Irma came through on September 14th 2017 it damaged or destroyed many residences within this area making it difficult if not impossible for some people living here to return home!
