Bartow is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Bartow was first populated by Native Americans, and early settlers were citizens of Jacksonville. A post office called "Bartow" was established in 1833, and remained in operation until 1907. Aiken sold his rights to Fort Walton Beach to Captain James Wainwright in 1865 for $2,000 cash – which made it one of only two areas in mainland Florida that were not captured by Union forces during the war effort (). Bartow, Florida is a small town in the corner of Polk and Monroe counties in east-central Florida. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee–Ft. Lauderdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name means "bridge over the bay" in Creek Indian language. The first settlers to Bartow were white men from Georgia who arrived in 1795 and named it after their friend and mentor, James Robertson Bartow (1746-1827), one of the original commissioners appointed by British Prime Minister George Washington to survey new land for statehood in Florida. In 1821, General Andrew Jackson sent an expedition under Commodore John Dickson to purchase land from Native American chiefs near present day Bartow Island for military purposes; this expedition also explored the area now known as Polk County. Afterward, construction on a road from Jacksonville to Fort Walton Beach began and soon people from all over came to live and work on what would become Bartow. In 1825, DeKalb County was formed from parts of Polk and Monroe Counties; it included most of what is now Bartow County except for a small portion that became part of Tampa Bay before being consolidated into Hillsborough County in 1907. In 1840, following annexation by Tampa Bay, Bartow had a population of just 256 people; however, by 1850 it had more than 3,000 residents living around three harbors - downtown (now called North Harbor), South Harbor, and West Harbor - which are still largely active today with boat ramps available for public use as well as retail shops and restaurants packed inside central business districts such as North Harbor or South Harbor along with several colleges/universities including USF University located on West Harbor waterfront property since 1905).
