Bartow, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,977 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name "Bartow" comes from the Miami-Fort Lauderdale trade route that ran through the area in the early 19th century. A post office called Bartow was established in 1853 and discontinued operation in 1911. In 1907, Jock Mahon purchased land east of Bartow and built a two-story creation on what is now Mahon Park Boulevard known as "The Plantation." In 1916/17 he also developed what became known as "The Manor," which had 5 bedrooms and 12 baths with a staff of 20 people. In 1931 Jock Mahon's son John P.Mahon donated to the town center a piece of land extending south from Main Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenueknown as "The Manor."" This property became home to local high school (now Bartow High School), playgrounds for the community children, an ice cream parlor, soup kitchen, library and more during its heyday in the 1930s- 1940s before it was taken over by Palm Beach County government for use as county courthouse annexe during World War II. On July 1, 1954 Bartow incorporated as a Village under Article XIII Section 3 of the Florida Constitution (). On October 26, 1959 President Eisenhower delivered his inaugural address from within The Plantation home of Jock Mahon III following his re-election victory over Adlai Stevenson (the first African American U.S. Presidential Candidate). After 50 years living off their original gift until being sold to Palm Beach County government in 1974 they reverted back to their old name - Bartow Village after their incorporation numbers were retired at that time; however all village activities are currently conducted out of Palm Beach County Government Headquarters located on US 1 just outside Ofalusia Junction., giving residents an easy access to all services our county offers without having to leave their homes We have always been proud members of Palm Beach County

Bartow is a city in the U.S. state of Florida, located on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was 21,010 as of the 2010 census. It is part of ad-hoc city government and is surrounded by Everglades National Park to the east, Palm Beach County to the south, and Jacksonville to the west. The name "Bartow" comes from Indian chief Miamiskee's name for a place where he could hunt bears or other game. The first white person to call this area Bartow was James Wilkinson in 1784 when he explored this region for Spain. In 1821 Spanish explorer Manuel de Campa named it San Marcos de la Barca after his father-in-law, Santiago Bautista Martinez y Arellano who had founded Stonington (now West Palm Beach) on an Island in Lake Worth near Fort Myers. This became known as Bartow because Captain John Fitch landed there on May 10th 1795 while sailing under British flag as part of a military expedition against Spanish American pirates led by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla who had seized power in Cuba after overthrowing Spanish colonial rule there some time earlier In 1835 A&P grocery store opened its doors at what is now Fourth Street and Northeast Avenue in downtown Bartow with future Mayor/Governor Bill Bartow serving as Manager/Owner at that time On November 3rd 1935 Hurricane Andrew struck southwestern Florida killing over 100 people including many residents living along US Highway 1 just north of today's City Limits
Bartow was founded in 1837 by Colonel James Bartow, a Confederate general. The city became the county seat of Bartow County in 1907.
