Bartow, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 5,029 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. The area now known as Bartow was first settled by Seminoles in the 18th century. At that time it was part of Spanish Florida and they called it "Juan Fortín de la Cueva". In 1821, Spanish settlers moved into what is now Bartow from Pensacola after losing control of Floridiana to American forces during the Mexican-American War. They named their new community "Bartow" for General John C. Bartow who had led Union troops against Santa Anna's Army at Yalobusha Creek in 1818. The post office at "Bartow" was established on November 12, 1827 and served until May 1, 1865. It was then renamed to "Polk City". When Polk County was created in 1907, it included parts of Bartow along with Live Oak and other towns within Hillsborough County which became part of Polk in 1912. As part of a general realignment plan announced by State Senator Tom Cleary on January 15, 1959, all but one municipality (Hillsborough) were transferred from Hillsborough to Polk Counties except for Bartow which remained within Hillsborough until 1974 when it also became a part of PolkCounty proper. In 1911 there were 3 businesses existing downtown: Jardine’s Clothing Store & Shoe Store; The Masonic Temple; and The Agricultural Implement House - this last being occupied by Wickersham Bros., Seed merchants since 1861 In 1924 the Post Office closed due to lack of mail volume; however Jardine’s reopened as an grocery store soon afterwards with help from local citizens who pooled their resources to purchase necessary equipment including a truckload of groceries for $1 per tonne hauled overland from Tampa via Lake Okeechobee . In 1951 Wickersham Bros., Seed Merchants vacated their building after becoming bankrupt due to expansion into interstate commerce carried out through state highway 95 beyond their current boundaries

In 1913, the name of the company was changed to Colt and began producing handguns under that name as well. Colt also produced holsters for horseback riding which helped popularize this type of activity in the area. In 1929, Colt merged with Browning to form Browning-Colt Firearms Corporation and continued producing handguns under that name until 1966 when it was purchased by Colts clone manufacturer Glock Inc.

Bartow, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1892 by John Bartow and his brother-in-law James Allbright as a small farming community on the east side of Lake Okeechobee. The area now includes parts of Bartow and Kissimmee counties. In 1912, Bartow became the site of one of America's first airfields when it was established at Fort Pickens on US 41 just south of the town center. During World War I, Bartow became an important supply stop for aviation units operating from Jacksonville and Gainesville airports. As commercial airlines began to grow in popularity during the late 1920s and early 1930s, Bartow saw a surge in development with construction of new homes, businesses, churches, schools and other infrastructure developments such as a cotton gin and distillery. In 1937, following annexation by Kissimmee into Osceola County (along with all other towns within Polk County), Bartow had its own governing body called the Municipal Authority which included a mayor/council system similar to that used today in most U.S. cities. Following World War II until 1955 when it merged with neighboring Sanford to form Sanford–Bartow County government under one roof - much like our modern day municipalities - Mayor Harry Hargrave served as both head of administration and headmaster for what would become known as "The Green Gables". In 1955 when Sanford–Bartow County government merged with neighboring Miami Beach to form Miami Beach–Miami Dade County government under one roof - much like our modern day municipalities - Mayor Harry Hargrave served as both head of administration and headmaster for what would become known as "The Heat Wave". The municipality continued operation until 1984 when it reverted back to its original name: Polk County Municipality
Bartow was founded by Captain John Bartow in 1824. He named the town after himself, and it became a major center for cotton farming in Florida. The town had a population of about 2,000 people by 1860. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army attacked Bartow, and the town was destroyed.
