Bartow, Florida is a city located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 43,567 at the 2010 census. It is home to the University of Central Florida and many businesses and industries. The community was founded by farmers and their families in 1881 as Bartow Plantation. In 1896 it became a post office and in 1907 it became a town when the state of Florida created Polk County. The name "Bartow" comes from John Bartow, an early settler who lived on the site until his death in 1875. In 1951 Bartow had its first school library which opened with books donated by members of the local school board. The current library located on Main Street was built in 1978 and replaced an older building that served as the town hall until that time. The town has two churches - First Baptist Church and Second Baptist Church - both of which were built between 1865 and 1870. Both are now historical landmarks within the community. There are also several businesses located within its boundaries including: Bartow Hardware (founded 1918), KFC (founded 1948), JCPenney (founded 1959), Applebees (founded 1969), Tyson's Pizza (opened 1984) and CVS Pharmacy (opened 1990). Uptown Dancehall closed down in 2009 but reopened under new ownership as "Dancehall Live". In 2013 they announced they will be closing again after 10 years due to low attendance levels but have not given any indication what will happen next

Bartow, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 9,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville-Kunshua-Lee City metropolitan area. The name "Bartow" comes from Bartram who settled in this area in 1837 and named it for his brother John Bartow. The first settler in Bartow was James Wilkinson who arrived on horseback in 1838. He established a cabin on what is now US 1 near present day State Road 309. Wilkinson's cabin remains as an extant structure within the limits of Bartow today. In 1840, John Wilkinson moved to this location and built himself a two story frame house on land he had purchased from Captain William Tatum of Stonington, Connecticut. This house still stands within the boundaries of Bartow today as does the Wilkinson family graveyard which lies east of US 1 between SR 309 and SR 312 (formerlySR 317). In 1846, George Stephenson erected a sawmill on the site of present day US 1 and Middle Creek which became known as Stephenson Mill Pond because it fed water to that mill from Middle Creek. The sawmill operated until about 1907 when it was replaced by a more modern mill which still stands today within the boundaries of Bartow today. In 1868, Jnoeph Pritchard traveled through Polk County and discovered there were vast tracts of virgin lands lying eastward along both upper Jaguar River (now Kissimmee Lake) and lower Creekshore Creek systems that could be developed into large plantations depending upon their accessibility due to their rich soil composition with low levels of heavy minerals like copper or zinc.. After making some survey trips throughout Polk County Pritchard purchased over 2,000 acres including what is now much smaller portions of present day Bartow Township including parts annexed by nearby Evergreen Park in 1925 From these purchases Pritchard organized what would become known as The Jacksonville Land Company with Wm Catton its president and general manager.. With this organizing effort Pritchard laid out what are now four neighborhoods bearing his name: North Park - bounded by I-4 exit 31 southbound; South Park - bounded by SR 309 northbound; East Park - bounded by SR 312 southbound;West Park - bounded by I-4 exit 26 northbound . These neighborhoods were intended primarily for white settlement but have since been populated largely by black residents . Some other early settlers were Jnoeph Flournoy who settled just west sideof US1 opposite Stephenson Mill Pond before eventually moving to Adamstown ,near Jacksonville ; Capt John Dickson who settled just north sideof US1 next to Noxubee River before moving downriver to Winter Haven ; Thos Rankin who also settled just north sideof US1 nextto Noxubee River before moving downstream towards Winter Haven ; Asa Sumner who also founded Rankin Farms westsideof I-4 Exit 26 acrossfrom Indian Mts Resort before eventuallyMoving inland towards Sanford .. Hezekiah Warrick also made an early purchase adjacent to Indian Mts Resort prior to latermoving inland towards Sanford .. Some other early settlers include Geoge Hardwick Sr., Abel Hardwick Jr., Solomon Hurdsfield & others.. Many African Americans did not move away from slavery until after World War II when many freedmen found work hereabouts in agriculture or construction... About 1900 most all white families left for better opportunities elsewhere while blacks continued living hereabouts although they lost some civil rights during Reconstruction.... By 1910 only 3 percent of population remained black while 90 percent whites had departed... Today there are only about 50 black residents living inside city limits while most people associated with bartOW are either descendants or natives live outside city limits..............A Brief History Of BarthOW Including Its Settlers
Bartow was founded in 1835 as a town on the Apalachicola River. When Florida became a United States state in 1845, Bartow was made the county seat of Polk County. On January 6, 1907, Bartow was annexed by Jacksonville, and on January 1, 1912 it became part of Jacksonville proper.
