Bartow was founded in 1892 by John Bartow and his brother James. The town developed around a post office, store and vegetable stand called the "Garden Grazer". In 1926 the town became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and council system. In 1990 Bartow lost its status as a municipal city when it merged with Kissimmee to form the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The economy of Bartow is based primarily on agriculture and ranching. Some of the largest employers in Bartow are PNC Bank, Lockheed Martin Corporation and Disney World Resort/DisneySea theme parks. There are also several small businesses in the community which include several convenience stores, two churches, one barbershop and one hair salon among others In addition to these larger businesses there are also many smaller ones that support local residents such as restaurants, bars and other shops

In 1763 a group of Seminole Indians led by Chief Osceola attacked a party of Spaniards who were exploring this area looking for new land to claim as their own colony. This event is known as the Battle of Stono Ferry which resulted in one death and four injuries for both sides involved. In 1824 Colonel James Wilkinson constructed Fort Walton Beach on an island off the coast of Jupiter Island in order to protect his interests in Mobile Bay during Seminole Wars with Spain. After American forces recaptured Fort Walton Beach from Spain in 1898, they used it as their winter quarters until they built Fort Riley on nearby Baldwin Island in 1899-1900 after blockade runner USS Alabama had been lost off Jupiter Island with supplies destined for Cuba during Castro’s Revolution against Spanish rule there in 1959-60 (see Cuban Missile Crisis). In 1905 Governor Jelvinsidey formed a commission to study ways to improve transportation within Polk County so that more people could be brought into the county without having to leave their homes or villages near Polk City Limits (see growth around town).
