It is the second most populous city in Polk County after hitusr Tampa and it is home to the University of South Florida. The area that now Bartow was first settled by Seminoles in 1821. In 1945, during World War II, Bartow was part of the Soil Defense Project which developed underground water supplies for the Army's Pacific Theater of Operations. Bartow is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Bartow was James Witherspoon, who arrived in 1837. He named his land after General John A. Bartow, an American general who fought in the Seminole Wars and later served as a U.S. congressman from Florida. The first commercial enterprise in Bartow was a grocery store opened by Witherspoon and his brother-in-law, J.C. Poston, in 1843. Bartow became a township on December 12, 1853; it was renamed to its present name on February 13, 1907.[1] The post office operated from1873 until 1906.[2] In 1951 the township had 1,464 residents and annexed Sanford.[3] In 1959 the town annexation replaced Sanford's one-time separate school district with a new consolidated system which included all of Bartow east of I-4 (the current boundaries for Bartholomew County were set when that county was created). In 1965 Bartow voters approved annexation into Orange County as part of an effort to relieve pressure on local schools caused by growth in nearby Osceola County .[4][5][6][7][8] The city of Orlando then annexed much of northeastern Sanford from Bartow along with other surrounding townships on December 1st 1978,[9][10] creating what is now known as 73rd Street Corridor West (i.e., portions of Orange Blossom Trail south to Northwest Parkway). However some residents remain within their respective townships while others have relocated to newer developments outside of town limits such as Winter Park and Lake Buena Vista
