The island served as a landing ground for American officers during the Seminole Wars. In 1814, Colonel John Cushing, commander of Fort Brooke on Tampa Bay, built a small fort on the island and named it Fort Cushing in honor of Cushing. In 1838, Captain Lewis Cass led an expedition across Florida and Georgia that discovered Pensacola Bay and designated it as the new naval base for Florida. The town of Pensacola developed around this time and was called Santa Rosa de Tenerife by Spanish settlers because of its high mountain range dominating the bay. However, because Spanish law did not recognize U.S. territorial jurisdiction over Florida, Santa Rosa de Tenerife continued to be known as Pensacola until 1841 when it became part of what is now Bartow County. Between 1840-1846, numerous military campaigns were fought in Florida involving units from both countries including one which resulted in the Battle of Mexico City which ended with Commodore Stephen Decatur's capture by Mexican forces For much of this time period there was no regular civilian government in place so Defense Department officials operated out of Fort Brooke located on Tampa Bay which also served as their primary headquarters for operations throughout Florida . Brazilian sailors operating off Key Largo frequently used this area for gunnery practice due to its excellent weather conditions . A small grid fort consisting only two guns was constructed at Islamorada (now Sarasota) between 1847-1849 during hostilities between Brazil and Spain over control of Cuba Later that year USS Constitution (of New England) arrived at Port Royal Sound off Jupiter River after finally freeing Cuba from Spanish rule following several years of captivity
Bartow, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,814 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1883 by John Bartow and his family. The name comes from "baton" (a type of staff) because it once served as the county's primary means of transportation. In 1903, Bartow donated land to create what is now Bartow Municipal Airport. In 1933, John Fenton became the first Mayor of Bartow after being elected to office on a platform of creating jobs in the local economy through community development programs. In 1959, coastal erosion caused salt water to enter Lake Okeechobee and fill parts of downtown and other areas around Lake Okeechobee; this led to an increase in crime rates in the area and ultimately forced the closure of several businesses including a movie theater that had been open for over fifty years. After much discussion between government officials and business owners about how to address these problems without closing down any businesses, it was decided that a new downtown would be built with more shopping options available within walking distance for residents and tourists alike. This project cost $2 million dollars and took two years to complete; which included demolishing most if not all of old downtown into make way for new construction which included large amounts of high-end retail space as well as new public buildings such as City Hall and jail cells. Today, Downtown Bartow offers many modern amenities such as restaurants, bars/pubs, hotels/motels etc., making it one OF THE most vibrant areas in Polk County! The revitalization process continued when Hurricane Irma hit on September 5th 2017 causing widespread damage throughout bothbartowand its neighboring cities including Clearwater Beach which lies only five miles away frombartow
