The first European to settle in Bartow was Captain John Smith, who arrived on October 17, 1607. He named the area "Bartow" after his home town of Barbados. The English built a fortification at Fort Walton Beach during their occupation of Florida in 1763. In 1821, Governor James K. Polk ordered the construction of a new fortress at Fort Brooke near what is now Bartow. The fortifications were used as a base for military operations against Seminole Indians and later served as barracks for Cuban soldiers during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. In 1892, Bartholomew Burt founded an agricultural company that became one of Florida's most successful businesses. Burt's farmproduced hay, citrus fruit, soybeans and cotton until it closed its doors in 1978. In 1936, Jerald Witherspoon purchased land north of what is now Bartow from Fenton County for $25 per acre; he developed it into an estate known as Witherspoon Park today. Witherspoon was one of Florida's most influential landowners and helped develop many important aspects of local culture including golfing and NASCAR racing. In 1957, Congress passed the National Firearms Act which Required all firearms transactions to be conducted through licensed dealers rather than individual owners or gunsmiths like previous law required previously (which gave criminals access to unregistered firearms).
