Bartow, Florida is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by Polk County to the north and east; Hillsborough County to the south and west; and Lakeland County to the northwest. The area now known as Bartow was first settled in 1835 by brothers John and James Bartow. The town was named for General James Wilkinson Bartow, who fought in the Mexican-American War as a captain under José Joaquín Santa Anna. The town had a post office from 1838 until it was discontinued in 1846. In 1840, Jacksonville Township was formed within Polk County, and land near present-day Bartow was donated by Colonel Edward Hutton to form that township’s limits. In 1851, Jackson Township merged with Polk County to become Bartow Township. In 1857, a post office called "Bartow" opened at what is now downtown BartOW after James Ewing moved there from Winter Garden (now Fort Walton Beach). At times during its history, BartOW had more residents than any other municipality in PolkCounty save Jacksonville (which had over 6500 residents). In 1903, an act of Congress created Lakeland Park on Kissimmee Bayou just north of today's downtown BARTOW—the first municipally owned park anywhere in America outside of New York City or Washington D.C.. When annexation occurred by Tampa in 1907 of much of Hillsborough County including most of what is now downtown BARTOW—Lakeland Park became part of Tampa proper while still comprising part ofbartowldale Municipality which included downtown bartow only because that portion extending into Pinellas county remained unincorporated until 1919 when it joined with Clearwater and Dunedin townships forming Clearwater Borough which became part of Tampa proper again upon incorporation into St Petersburg city Limits
