The name "Bartow" comes from the Seminole word "batawa", meaning 'place where there are cottonwoods'. The first settler in Bartow was James W. Bartow and his wife Martha on July 10, 1847. They were pioneers who established a post office and store on a piece of swampy land that now forms the eastern border of Bartow Township. In 1854, J.W. Bartow's son-in-law, George Coker laid out an orange orchard and citrus grove four miles west of present day Bartow on what is now State Road 441A (now CR 441A). These trees provided muchneeded employment for locals during the early years when cattle drives brought goods to town from Tampa Bay. By 1861, many other farmers had erectedouses in town including A P H Reynolds attorney general’s home which still stands today; G W Marriott’s well known hotel; Swayne & Company blacksmith shop; Post Office Department store; Mr Fenton’s grocery; Mrs Fenton’s millinery shop; Dr Kincaid’s barbershop and finally Matson Brothers oil refineries established just south of town limits in 1922 In 1915, Captain William A Baker donated land to support military exercises off the coast ofFlorida by US Naval Base Miami This gave rise to what is now called Naval Air Station Ocala NASO also helped develop airfields adjacent to NASO including Plantation Field near Present Day BartOW village) . NASO eventually became known as Eglin Air Force Base (EAGLE) after General Curtis LeMay took command of its predecessor North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) in 1949.. Polk visited Bartow during his campaign for president in 1844 and Introduction of the First National Bank occurred here on December 8th, 1844 by J. Prentice Cox as President of the First National Bank Company of Jacksonville Incorporated under the laws of Florida Territory; which opened with fifteen members: A E Bartow (First Vice President), W H Brooks (Secretary), C F Giffin (Director), I L Payne (Director). In 1865 an act was passed creating Polk County; thenceforward the county seat was located at Sanfordville until that station became unimportant due to population growth within Polk County proper; however, Sanfordville continued to be used as a courthouse until new buildings were erected there in 1907-1908 by agreement between both counties and now It constitutes one side of downtown Sanfordville which has constantly grown since then due to its convenient location near most major roads and shopping centers as well as excellent public schools including Seminole High School which has won numerous state championships dating back to when it was founded in 1918 This paper will discuss some important aspects about history of Bartow including its establishment as a county seat on December 8th, 1844 by an act passed by Congress following the Mexican-American War, its subsequent evolution into a thriving center for agriculture and commerce growing rapidly during Reconstruction period, significant events associated with that time such as foundation of Seminole High School in 1918 and current day trends
