Bartow, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bartow was founded in 1885 by J.P. Bartow and named for him after General John Quincy Adams Bartow who fought in the American Civil War as a Confederate general. In 1907, the town was purchased by J.M. Weldon and renamed Weldon City after him. The town had a population of 10,000 when it lost its status as an incorporated city in 1961 due to budget cuts by then- Mayor Tom Bradley and other local officials. In 1995, Bartow became one of six communities in Polk County to receive assistance from Tallahassee Regional Airport Authority (TRAA) with making changes to their airports to improve passenger service and make them more efficient and attractive to businesses and travelers; This program is known as "TRAA's Air corridor". The airport now has three runways: runway 12/30 (to the east), runway 17/35 (to the south), and runway 7/25 (to the west). The name "Bartow" comes from Captain James Dickey who landed his vessel there on October 21st 1821 while exploring what would become Florida from Cuba through Tampa Bay
