Bartow is a small town in central Florida, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Bartow was first inhabited by Achenegkian and Timucua Indians. In 1821, Spanish missionaries founded a mission in what is now Bartow, naming it San Marcos de Tolosa (St. Martin's Chapel). When Spain lost its colonies in the Mexican–American War (1848), Mexico took over Santa Fe Island and incorporated it into Tehuantepec County as part of Coahuila y Tejas province; Bartow remained an unincorporated community under Mexican rule until 1874 when it became part of US Grant Parish. In 1896, following the annexation of Cuba to the US, Florida statehood was granted to Florida; within two years Governor John C. Hager had designated Bartow as its capital city. On July 7, 1899 commissioners from each county voted to accept annexation by Jacksonville and establish Jacksonville as the new county seat with jurisdiction over all but 10% of Polk County including Bartow which remained unincorporated. The residents of both towns initially refused to move because they thought their homes would still be there after Jacksonville gained jurisdiction; however, on November 3rd 1898 a vote was taken for all citizens of both cities to move into new government buildings located on high ground east of downtown Jacksonville which would serve as their new seats starting January 1st 1899 In 1902 an oil well was drilled near present day Bartow and production began in 1903; due to this development and other economic advancements within the community developers built numerous large houses throughout downtown from 1909-1920s forming one large blocks across from First Baptist Church on Park Avenue which continues today as One block West between NW 6th Street & NW 9th Street known locally as "The Grid". It wasn't until 1933 that Interstate 95 bypassed downtown causing many businesses owners along Park Avenue/NW 9thStreet to relocate out into newer areas such as Midtown or North Beach depending on traffic flow during rush hours During World War II most jobs were done outside mainland America so much so that many businesses closed down during The Great Depression while others converted back into retail outlets once hostilities ended In 1957 voters approved a $2 million bond issue giving local schools authority over budgets while also authorizing property tax assessions for school district purposes beginning January 1st 1958 . This led to construction of what is currently called High School District No 2 (HSD 2) immediately northwest of Downtown/Park Avenue with initial facilities opening in 1959 followed by Elementary School District No 1 (ESD1) serving Downtown/Oakland Park

In 1886, Bartow became part of Lake County when it was created from portions of Orange and Osceola counties. In 1930, Bartow was named one of sixty five towns or cities in Florida to receive funds from the Works Progress Administration (WPA). These funds were used to improve local infrastructure such as roads, schools, fire departments, and parks. Since then, Bartow has experienced various waves of growth that have led to increased commercial activity and development along its downtown streets. Today, Bartow remains an important cultural center for Central Florida with its rich history and diverse attractions.
