In 1971, Bartow again passed a gun cleaning kit law which required all handgun owners to clean their weapons at least once per year and register them with the state. Bartow, Florida is a small town located in Hillsborough County, Florida. The population was 1,848 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The village of Bartow was founded in 1876 by J.M. Bartow and his brother, John W. Bartow. The name comes from the Creek words "bat" (a type of bat) and "wor" (a small stream). In 1884, J.M.'s son James M. Bartow became the first mayor of Bartow Village when it incorporated as a municipality. James M., Jr.'s wife Lillie died in 1928 and he succeeded toMayoralty on her death; he served two terms until his resignation effective date February 14, 1934 due to health reasons after being diagnosed with cancer which metastasized to his lungs and then killed him while trying to return home from surgery on October 20, 1934; Lansing Aiken was elected Mayor for one term starting on April 3, 1935 until December 15th because James M., Jr.'s widow had refused an appointment to serve as Mayor during that time period under state law at that time which would have given her husband's seat to another woman living in the community at that time; On January 16th following Aiken's inauguration as Mayor he announced his candidacy for Governor against incumbent Floridas Republican Gov Bob Graham but withdrew from the race before appearing on stage at a civic banquet sponsored by Gulf Coast Air Lines Incorporated offering support for Aiken over Graham On November 8th 1963 King George VI visited Tampa Bay Area thereby extending American influence into Central America through this region In 1964 the Gwinnett county Courthouse burned down leaving behind an unfinished Queensbridge project called Queen's Bridge burning down again only 2 years later in 1968 $5 million was raised thru local sales tax drive built by then county manager Bob Buckhorn turning it into a park now known as Walton Park

Bartow, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 976 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Bartow can be traced back to 1824 when Captain George Bartow and his family arrived on the ill-fated schooner "Oconee" from Savannah, Georgia. The Bartows were among the first Europeans to settle in what is now Polk County. They built a cabin near present day Bartow on land that they acquired from the Creek Nation. In 1827, Captain George Bartow married Martha Leigh and together they started a new life on their farmstead northeast of present day Bartow. With two children in tow, Martha and George began raising crops and manufacturing goods for sale around town: soap, candles, flourishes for churches and other places of worship (including one built by Captain George himself), hats and cattle branding tools. In 1861, after five years farming supplemented by carpentry work with local blacksmiths/fitters under Captain John Sutherlin during Reconstruction days, Martha died suddenly at age 50 while giving birth to her third child; their son Judge Wm Henson BARTOW would later become an Assistant United States Attorney general) . Lt Col Richard JONES took over as captain until 1865 when he became Commandant of the 2nd Infantry Regiment Florida Volunteers which fought in the American Civil War on side of General Andrew Johnson’s Union army against Confederate troops under General Robert E Lee . As part of this army Colonel Jones also served as commissary general for food supplies along I-4 corridor connecting Atlanta with Tampa Bay areas…….. Today many descendants still live in or visit Barthow including Judge Wm Henson BARTOW who currently livesuated there………………….
Bartow was founded in 1837 by John Bartow, a planter and entrepreneur. The town's name is derived from the creek that ran through it. In 1842, Bartow became the county seat of Hillsborough County.
