After the war ended, Captain Jameson Smith returned to South America and left his brother behind at Bartow Island (now known as Bartow Island), where they built a small fortuitous enough for future exploration by their father-in-law and uncle Andrew Lewis who also arrived from South America soon afterwards on an English fishing vessel called "Netherlands". They named their new settlement Fort George after Admiral George Rodney's flagship HMS " Vanguard ", which had been lost off Cape St Vincent some time before when its crew were saving supplies for Rodney's ill-fated voyage home from Venezuela during the early part of the American Revolution. Commodore John Hawkins sailed into Miami Bay on October 20th, 1795 aboard HMS " Dolphin ".
