Bartow is a town in Osceola County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Osceola County. The land that would become Bartow was first settled by Seminole Indians in 1794. In 1837, Colonel James Wilkinson purchased from the Seminoles 750 acres (280 ha) of land east of Fort Myers for $5,000. Wilkinson named his new settlement "Bartow" after his friend and business associate James A. Bartlett. The post office called the community "Bartyville" until 1903 when it changed to its current name due to confusion with Jacksonville, Florida's then-current capital city. In 1906, an act of Congress designated what is now Bartow as part of Miami-Dade County and required that all county seats be located within Miami-Dade County boundaries so as not to create any extrajudicial claims against other counties by residents of those cities which did not become part of Miami-Dade County. As a result, Bartow became the sole municipality within Osceola County when it was created on February 14, 1907 from parts of Dade and Monroe Counties. The original plat for what would eventually become Bartow included 4 blocks extending along Northwest 10th Street between Northeast First Street and Northwest Second Street; this block would later be demolished to make way for Interstate 95 exit 9A/US 31 (now I-95 Business Loop). In 1912, Congressman Manuel Lighthouse proposed annexing Bartow into Dade County but this proposal was rejected by lawmakers because Dade had already annexed much larger numbers of municipalities than Miami-Dade and there were also concerns about how annexation would impact local services such as education or transportation delivery systems such as roads and airports while still lying within their jurisdiction
Bartow County was created on February 14, 1838, from parts of Walton and Hillsborough counties. The county seat was Bartowville. As of the 2010 census, the population was 771, up from 686 as of 2000.
