In 1870 citrus crops were introduced to Bartow by J&J Fertile Company founder James Fertile and began yieldingchicken eggs which soon led to increased production of oranges and other fruits hereabouts On January 1st 1889 local businessman John Murtaugh leased from King Cotton & Railway Co., the first cotton gin in what would become Polk County With development comes new residents - many coming during World War II because of its military needs: bartowsmiths created machine guns for use by Coast Guard stations along with naval gunnery training facilities; numerous homes were constructed as barracks for soldiers during World War II including one near present day USF aerial path 20 miles east of town
