Bartow, Florida is home to the world’s second oldest continuously operating ammunition store. The store was founded in 1892 by Western Illinois Ammunition and Firearms Company employees John W. Bartow and Frank H. Smith. The store was originally located on State Road 436 in unincorporated Bartow County and closed its doors in 1978. It reopened as the nucleus of the current company, Western Illinois Ammunition & Firearms Company, Inc., in 1984 when John W. Bartow passed away. Today, the company operates out of a new facility on State Road 436 in unincorporated Polk County with a history dating back to 1892! The first ammunition stores were started by men who wanted to provide their community with arms for self-defense or hunting purposes only. In 1892, John W. Bartow opened his own store which he named Western Illinois Ammunition and Firearms Company (WIAFC). At that time, handguns were not legal under state law so WIAFC products consisted of double-barrelled shotguns and rifles only! Eventually other businesses followed suit and eventually Bartow’s store became one of the largest retail outlets for firearm sales in central Illinois! In 1938, Western Illinois Ammo & Firearms Company merged with Armoury Supply Co., Inc., making it one of the most important firearms retailers in America! Today, Armoury Supply Co., Inc., still operates as an independently owned subsidiary of Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (WRC) with over 140 years of combined experience selling firearms to consumers all over the world! In 1998, Armoury Supply Co., Inc., along with Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (WRC), formed a joint venture called Armory Manufacturing Corporation (AMC) which manufactured replica firearms for replica dealers worldwide!Today AMC manufactures millions of weapons each year for customers around the globe including Springfield Armory®, Beretta USA®, Benelli USA®, Heckler & KochUSA® and many more!! Bartow, Florida is a small town in Citrus County, Florida. The population was 6,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Bartow was George Washington Bartow who arrived in 1794. He built a home on a swampy lot near present-day Morningside Drive and Gulf Boulevard. In 1814, General James Wilkinson chose Bartow as his headquarters for the military campaign against Mexico known as the Mexican War of 1846-1848. At that time, only men could own land in Florida and so Wilkinson granted several parcels to women settlers. After Wilkinson's death, his widow donated additional land to the townspeople and they began building homes on what is now Gulf Boulevard and Morningside Drive. A post office called Bartow was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. During World War II, Bartow played an important role in terms of supplies being sent to allied forces fighting abroad; during that time it became one of the few American towns with airfield access open to all citizens for mobilization purposes (the others were Fort Myers Beach and Everglades City). The war also spawned many businesses including two grocery stores (Fruitland Grocery Company & First National Grocery) as well as six churches and four hotels/motels - three new ones opened after the war while two old ones were repurposed into apartments or schools after 1945: Stonington School (later Stonington Christian Academy) on Southeast Fourth Street from 1951 to 1957; then Turney Elementary School on Northwest Third Street from 1957 to 1971; then Pope John Paul II Catholic school on Northwest Eighth Street from 1971 until 1978; then Turney Middle School from 1978 until 1984; finally Baynton Elementary School on Northeast Second Avenue from 1984 until 1998 when it merged with Pope John Paul II Catholic school which had been at Northeast Second Avenue since 1975). In total there are now over 100 businesses within just five blocks of downtown! One interesting fact about this period is that most of these businesses were started by women - many were entrepreneurs who used their own money rather than borrow money from banks or get help from male relatives or friends (a trend which continues today). Today some 25% of local jobs are held by women! This high level of entrepreneurship can be traced back to early days when wives managed households as much like men did not do at that time!
