Bartow is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,393 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. The name Bartow comes from Indian Chief Bartow and may have been derived from an early Spanish explorer's plan to trade with Native Americans on the east coast of Florida. The first European settler in what is now Bartow was George Price, who arrived in 1795. He platted what is now Bartow on a spot that would become the city limits of Sanford. The first post office was established in 1821, and by 1827 there were twelve stores and one hotel in the town. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell made his headquarters near present-day Sanford while he besieged Union forces at Gaines Mill; as a result, most of Bartow formed part of Confederate territory along with much of central Florida. In 1865 Union General John Bate ordered all Confederate prisoners to be paroled and allowed to rejoin their families; as a result, many residents returned home soon after the war ended. After Reconstructionist policies were put into effect in America following the Civil War, many African Americans moved into what is now Barthow during this time period. This migration led to increased competition for jobs within white society and also helped spur development in areas such as retailing and service industries throughout early twentieth century Barthow locals date back to when Baptist missionary James White opened his store on Third Avenue (now Business Boulevard) about 1875 or so AGEs ago – giving these citizens some form of community connectedness which has not yet been tarnished by recent events or lack thereof! Bartow is a small, but rich and historic town located in the southwestern corner of Polk County, Florida. The population was 3,592 at the 2010 census. The name "Bartow" may be derived from Indian Chief Bartow's Refuge or Bartow's Fort as a result of its location on the Battle Creek River. The first permanent settler in Bartow was James Annesley who came overland from Georgia in 1825. He built an antebellum plantation near what is now downtown Bartow. This saw heavy use as a military base during the Seminole Wars and also served as a commercial center because it lay at the junction of two major waterways. In 1827 Annesley married Anna Maria Keyes and they set out to explore this new land they had purchased. They named their new home after Anna Maria's paternal ancestor, Colonel John Keyes who fought with General Andrew Jackson during the American Revolution. AnnaMariaKeyes died in 1829 and James Annesley continued to reside on his plantation until his death in 1840 aged 72 years. After James' death his widow sold part of her inheritance to physician William Batey for $2,000 which he used to purchase land northeast of downtown Bartow; this land would later become known as White Pine Plantation. It was here that Dr. Batey began practicing medicine before moving to Jacksonville where he became one of America's most famous physicians and developed an extensive private practice there too- something that would keep him busy until his retirement many years ago This early settlement by white people only lasted for about 10 years due to lack of support from either political or financial entities which ultimately led to development around them It wasn't until 1830 when Captain George Rogers Clark arrived on horseback looking for land for himself and his followers with intentions of establishing a new capital city on the Gulf coast that any real progress started happening However despite initial optimism by Rogers Clark, no serious action was taken towards founding what would eventually become Tampa Bay Area Instead he made numerous visits back upriver including one in 1832 where he met then-Governor David Levy who offered him 2,500 acres (1 km²) along with 5 other farmers if he could erect a fortification so that troops could protect Mobile Bay against Native Americans . Although it wasn't long before Rogers Clark realized how unwise this idea was given both militarily and politically unstable times were developing locally at this point; so instead he abandoned Tallahassee and moved westward into what is now Pensacola Peninsula Widespread hostility among local gentry resulted inCaptainClark being forced out OF Mobile Bay altogether during Apalachicola Expedition on 12 February 1796 under orders from Governor Bradford .
