Aventura, Florida is a small town in the Miami-Dade County, Florida area. It is located on U.S. Route 1 between Miami and West Palm Beach. The population was 9,829 at the 2010 census. Aventura is one of two cities in Miami-Dade County (the other beingMiami) that are designated as urban areas by the county government. The first people to live in what is now Aventura were Indian natives who hunted and gathered wild plants and animals near the present day mouth of Key Biscayne Bay. In 1835, Spanish settlers arrived from Havana, Cuba with Mission San José de la Vega on Little Haiti island next to Aventura bay. Diego Rivera met these Spaniards while serving as a page at Madrid's Royal Palace before he was transferred to Cuba under royal command in 1837 aboard HMS " Phaeton". Rivera was part of an expedition led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna that lost its way en route to Cuba during the Mexican War of Independence and ended up landing on Key Biscayne Peninsula instead. In 1845, about 60% of all land east of Miami was owned by Cuban landowners; 5% or less by American citizens owning individual plots or holdings smaller than .5 acres (1 hectare). With few exceptions, these properties remained with their owners until after World War II when they became property of state agencies such as Everglades National Park and Homestead Authority along with manymilitary installations built there over time including Fort Lauderdale Naval Air Station Plantation No. 1 which closed in 1991 and become part of Everglades National Park; Monroe Army Ammunition Plant also built here; Crane Air Force Base opened here in 1949; Avondale Golf Club opened here in 1957 In 1925, local residents voted to annex what is now Aventura into nearby unincorporated Miami Township so that this township could have more services available for its citizens without having to go through city hall bureaucracy which had been slow to respond to requests for annexation from neighboring municipalities like Westwood Village & Coconut Grove Village.). When annexation did not happen because some members of Township Council wanted more say about how their municipality should be run (), residents successfully petitioned for cityhood status for Aventura on November 14th, 1959 (). On December 11th 1959 City Hall granted cityhood status via charter amendment even though it still followed zoning regulations set forth by Township Council since 1925 (). In 1965 a large shopping mall called "Mall One" was constructed just west of downtown beach fronting US 1/State Road 823 - eventually becoming known as Mall Of America - giving rise thento(and continuing currently)to nickname "Avenida Mall". The mall itself has since been demolished but much surrounding development remains including several thousand housing units developments plus tens if not hundreds if not thousands more businesses etc.. As per 2016 estimates almost 85% percent all jobs within Aventura are either related directly or indirectly to economic development activities represented thereby making it one of most thriving communities across South Florida both economically and socially .. Just south off I-95 exit 64A you will see several high end luxury homes being developed called 'The Oaks'. This area used once be home mainly To Latino businessmen running smuggling operations but recent waves also include African Americans (& others) working there too... Recently enacted new zoning laws have caused redevelopment activity along Sunrise Highway (SR 826),Pinecrest Drive (SR 827), Airport Boulevard (CR 317), Hialeah Parkway (SR 711)... notably 'Lighthouse Pointe' which fronts runway 12/30 adjacent airport... Many popular tourist destinations within minutes’ drive such as Hollywood Hills Casino Resort &theme park., Coral Gables casino resort & theme park., Daytona Beach casino resort & theme park., Jupiter flyway airport , New Smyrna Beach .... etc.. Finally just north off I-95 exit 64B you will find palm trees shaded streets leading down into quasi rural setting complete with fresh water wells dotting every block
