Aventura is located on the western side of Miami and is bordered by Davie to the north, Biscayne Bay to the east and south, and Kendall Park to the west. The city's namesake comes from Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto who named it after Avellaneda, his guide in his first journey through this part of South America in 1511. The area that now makes up Aventura was first inhabited by Taínos/Tainos who were known for their hunting skills. They built their homes on high hills overlooking the bay where they could watch ships enter and leave Miami Harbor. By 1700 AD these Native Americans had moved away from this area towards what would become Kendall Park which was then called Indian Key because it was only accessible by boat or sailing vessel. In 1847 land changed hands again when Major James Kapp acquired 1 mile (1 km) of shoreline near present day Aventura Boulevard from Captain Samuel McIntyre for $2 per acre (0·86 m²). This land became home to Kapp's phosphate works which were started immediately upon acquisition as there wasn't any good land nearby that could be used for agriculture due to its difficult location on an island surrounded by water. After years of construction work and many accidents at theworks Kapp finally closed down his phosphate operation in 1892 following a defeat in a congressional hearing caused by accusations made against him of bribery and collusion with railroad executives during his tenure as mayor of Miami Beach . As part of this treaty, Mexico ceded most of Florida to the United States as well as Puerto Rico and Guam. On October 12, 1898, during World War I (1892-1914), Aventura joined with other small U.S.-controlled territories in a boycott of the Spanish war effort because they felt that Spain was not fulfilling its obligations under the Treaty of Paris. After World War I ended and America gained independence from Spain, Governor Manuel López de Santa Anna ordered all Spanish speaking residents expelled from the city on December 1st,.
