Aventura is a city located in the Everglades National Park, and is the county seat of Miami-Dade County. The population was 112,814 as of the 2010 census. It was founded on November 5, 1905 by J. C. Penney, who named it after his wife's birthplace in central Italy, Aventura (Avicenna). The original town consisted of only a few homes and a post office. In 1912–13, Aventura became part of the new county of Miami-Dade; at that time it had a population of just over 7,000 people. In 1935–36, Hurricane Frances destroyed much of downtown Aventura and killed about 60% of its inhabitants; however most businesses were quickly rebuilt and reopened. On December 15th 1936 Hurricane vented fury on Aventura when it made landfall near Cutler Bayou with winds up to 155 mph (250 km/h). Nearly all structures in downtown were destroyed or severely damaged including Penney's store which remained standing until 1949 when efforts began to modernize the cityscape by demolishing many of the older buildings and erecting new ones in their place. The old courthouse was preserved as an historical landmark until 1976 when it was sold to developer Minoru Yamasaki for use as a luxury condominium complex known as "Yamasaki Tower". In 1984–85 residents voted not to annex into neighboring Coral Gables because they felt that this would have resulted in less access to quality education for their children while also reducing their overall community functionability due to increased development northward adjacent to them which would have disrupted traffic patterns and caused other problems such as reduced accessspace for parks within walking distance from home). Consequently annexation failed but saw sporadic protests throughout ensuing years over zoning changes affecting vital recreational areas within reach of nearby neighborhoods without similar input from residents) . Finally on May 14th 2006 membersmet outside Yamasaki Tower after receiving complaints about water infiltration through exterior walls from poorly built underground parking lots adjoining their tower - resulting in one nightlong standoff between protesters and police before finally withdrawing following agreement reached between both sides.. This event marked the first time in historyMiami-Dade County has seen organized protest against developers
