Aventura, Florida is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 34,711 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the northeastern shore of Miami-Dade County and is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Aventura's history goes back to 1868 when two companies founded by Major John A. Hickey merged to become Aventura Land Company. The first inhabitants of what would become Aventura were Seminole Indians who had been living there for years before that. Spanish traders and settlers arrived during the early 1800s and soon after Indian removal began in 1838 many Seminole Indians also left for America in what would be known as the Trail of Tears. In 1868 Captain James Ketchum organized a group of Loyalists who came from Nova Scotia with the hope of helping to keep Cuba free from French rule and improve relations between Spain and its colonies including Cuba. He named his new settlement "Aventura" after one of his late father's friends in England, Sir George Townshend Ayer (1763-1848). The town had only six buildings when it was founded which included a storehouse, blacksmith shop, millrace (now an auto racing track), post office, school house and church which all stand today within downtown Aventura limits still standing side by side unchanged since their construction over sixty years ago! In 1899 Drs. John Haggerty & Mary Churchman opened what became known as "The Old School". This brick building was located on SW 27th Street between Eighth Avenue South and Ninth Avenue South facing Eighth Avenue South now home to Pompano Beach senior housing developments; however this building did survive into modern times remaining intact inside & out until it burned down in 2002! Aventura was founded in 1892 by J.M. Dent and W.H. Biddle as a small village on the east coast of Key West, Florida. At first it consisted only of three houses, but within two years the population had grown to twenty-six people and by 1905 Aventura had its own post office, telephone service, and a few businesses including groceries and hotels. In 1912 Aventura became an incorporated municipality with its own government and schools were built in what is now downtown Aventura. During World War II Aventura was one of the largest naval bases in the United States and during the war it grew to be one of the most heavily defended cities on the island chain. After the war many businesses closed down but some such asBank of America remained until they merged with Merrill Lynch in 1985 which led to their current location downtown.
