Aventura, Florida is a small town in Broward County, Florida on the state's south-central coast. The population was 12,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach metropolitan area. Aventura was founded in 1892 by Spanish settlers as Villa Achaica and became an incorporated city in 1912. The first settlement in what would become Aventura was made by José Gomez and his family on November 6, 1892 when they arrived from Coahuila, Mexico with six horses and four canoes. The land around Achaica was swampy and unsuitable for farming; but Gomez soon realized that this could not be abandoned because there were no other towns within reach of his new community. He named his new community after himself, Villa Achaica ( meaning "village ofacha"). By 1897, 600 people had moved to Villa Achaica from all over South Florida. Aventura started out as a small agricultural village with just 10 residents; however it quickly grew into a thriving industrial town due to its location near Fort Lauderdale and its position on the gulf coast between Miami and Fort Myers. In 1912, following annexation by Fort Lauderdale, Villa Achaica became an incorporated city under the name of "Aventura". At that time it had a population of 2200 people living in 332 buildings including 24 schools and 11 churches. The growth of industry brought about numerous social changes which affected both the occupants of Villa Achaica and those who lived nearby: many Hispanics immigrated during this time seeking better opportunities while others left because they found conditions too harsh or dangerous outside their homes - often leading to waves of migration across state lines once economic opportunities improved elsewhere. One such example is Lorenzo García who came to America at age 15 in 1902 after being kicked out of Spain for practicing Catholicism. García established himself as one of South Floridas biggest entrepreneurs during this period; he owned several businesses including two stores in downtown Miami before moving to Ft Myers where he built a textile mill which employed 1000 workers until it went bankrupt in 1932 . Other prominent business owners during this period include Fernando Ferrer who ran a bakery chain called La Caja de Fortuna throughout most OFFLINE years up until his death in 1984; Manuel Ibañez who ran successful Hispanic grocery stores throughout central FL during the early 1990s before selling them all along with entire warehouses full of foodstuff back to Mexican refugees fleeing President Vicente Fox's border policies
Aventura is a city in and the county seat of Sarasota County, Florida, United States. Its population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. Aventura was founded on November 15, 1892 by entrepreneur and citrus grower Arthur E. Reeves as a seasonal resort town for his employees working on his new sugarcane plantation in what is now mainland Florida. The name "Aventura" means "sailing point" in Spanish. The first post office opened in Aventura on December 5, 1893. In 1907 the town became an incorporated municipality with its own government and mayor. In 1932 Aventura annexed part of Fort Myers Island to form a new city limits that included all of present-day Sarasota County except Amboy Road which remains part of Fort Myers Island today. On November 15, 1992 Aventura had its first mayoral election and incumbent Mayor Harry Hager won with 54% of the vote against challenger John Fenton who received 36%.
