Aventura is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. It was established on November 12, 1881 by George A. Smith and his family. The population was 914 at the 2000 census. Aventura is part of the Jacksonville-based Metropolitan Statistical Area. Aventura's beginnings can be traced back to 1881 when George A. Smith and his family arrived in what is now Aventura from Georgia with the hope of finding a new home in Florida where they could raise their families. They soon discovered that they were not alone in this wish as other pioneers had also come to this area specifically for the citrus industry. In less than a year, George and his wife Anna founded what would become their first business - The Smith Crop Steamer Company which transported crops and goods between Jacksonville and Key West for local customers. As economic times changed and the citrus industry began to decline, so too did Aventura's economy; however, through hard work and determination, George and Anna persevered until their success became reality in 1911 when they opened their second business - The Gause Bros Grocery Store which served as both an anchor to the community's commercial district as well as its social center giving residents easy access to everything from groceries to entertainment options without leaving their homes! During World War II much of what is now downtown was destroyed by bombing raids during the early stages of WWII but due to dedication by many individuals including Mayor John Hickey Jr., most of it has been rebuilt over time into one of Jacksonville's most vibrant neighborhoods! In recent years there have been numerous efforts made by businesses within town such as The Pritchett Truck Stop & Cafe which has located adjacent to Town Hall allowing customers self-service ordering capabilities; remodeling/renovation projects being undertaken at several residences including Mrs. Wright’s Manor currently under construction that will include an indoor pool; plans are also underway for another grocery store that will join forces with Stonington Farms Market just west of downtown – adding even more vitality (and jobs)to the dining scene!
Aventura is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Miami metropolitan area. Aventura is located on the east coast of Key Largo and bordered by Kendall to the north, Biscayne Bay to the west and south, and Cutler Bay to the east. The first permanent settler in what is now Aventura was Manuel Alvarez who came from Mexico in 1835. He built a farm on Palmetto Key which he named "Alvarez Plantation." In 1839 an act of Congress designated Aventura Island as a U.S. territory, and Aventura became its capital. The name "Aventuras" was chosen because it sounded like "avenue de la venta," or market place for goods coming into Spanish America from South America (now Brazil). In 1840 John Hays established himself at Hays' Bluff near present day US 93rd Street and Cutler Bay Boulevard with his family; this was also known as Juan Gomez's Cayeuse Plantation until 1865 when it passed into private ownership under that name again. In 1841 James Swayne purchased some land east of present day US 17th Avenue about two miles northeast of where today's Gulfstream Park sits; this would later become known as Swayne's Key Site due to its strategic location between Cutler Bay Boulevard and US 17th Avenue on Keyshawn Beach Road just offshore from Swayne's Key House property - now part of Suncoast Resort & Casino . At this time there were only two houses in all of Aventura: Mr. Hays' Bluff house (& church) and Don Carlos Gomez's key site house (& church). Captain George Prentiss landed at Port Everglades on December 12, 1846 with his shipmates Rufus Webb & James Worthy after sailing around Cape Canaveral peninsula from Havana Cuba aboard HMS Beagle under Captains David Livingstone & John Franklin Expedition 15 months earlier While en route back home via Cape Horn they met American whaling vessels HMS Erebus & Terror off Fernandina bay November 13th 1846 while searching for new sources of food for their crew during their 5½ months stranded onboard HMS Erebus Upon reaching shore September 28th they discovered fresh water had flowed out through an opening in Ceiba hill since February 1st following heavy winter rains - thus proving that land mass hadn't sunk! This event led to Captain Prentiss becoming one of first Americans ashore ever in Florida! All 6 men disembarked unassisted onto President Ulysses S Grant’s short boat landing which took place just south side OF current day Military Park behind Stonington High School before being transported by horse drawn wagon 200 yards north along Flagler Beach road across Pensacola River to Navy Yard across Washington Ave SE corner Of Fort Pierce beach Which was then renamed Naval Station Jacksonville After arrival at Naval Station Jacksonville Captain Prentiss organized local militia company #1 (meaning “Allied soldier team”) began providing security for naval personnel stationed there until ordered by Admiral Dewey to leave January 2nd – Order arrived 3 days after his return from repairs at Tampa/St Petersburg!! It should be noted that Aventuras wasn't actually founded until after Captain Prentiss landed here - even though everyone seems to think so based on stories told over time about him! In 1850 Fenton Brown settled down hereabouts with his wife Harriett Ivey Brown did business as Mrs Price Stores until her death in 1908 followed by her husband Fenton Jr., Fenton Sr.'s son who operated Blue Water grocery store next door (now defunct) also prioritizing groceries over other activities up until his father bought out Harriett Ivey's share circa 1922 During World War II many servicemen lived here including pilots such as Jimmy Doolittle Jr., Chuck Yeager Jr., Eddie Rickenbacker III etc... Overflow control tower built near current day intersection Of Orange Blossom Trail And Greenbelt Dr served locals well during storm surge aftermath Hurricane Irma made landfall August 25 2017 causing extensive damage however no loss or fatalities occurred
