Aventura, Florida is home to one of the most eclectic and diverse ammunition history collections in the United States. This rich history dates back to 1915 when a group of local businessmen started purchasing large quantities of rounds from various suppliers in order to create their own reloading supply company. Ammunition production began at this company, which was eventually renamed Averaula Ammunition Company. The operation grew quickly and by 1922, Averaula had created its own manufacturing plant in nearby Ocala. In 1935, Averaula merged with another ammo business, Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester), creating what would be known as the Winchester-Averaula Corporation. The early years of the corporation were tumultuous; it was struggling against stiff competition from larger rivals like Remington Arms Company and Browning Arsenal. However, despite these challenges, Winchester-Averaula continued to grow rapidly and by 1942 had reached a total population of over 1 million employees worldwide. By 1945, Winchester-Averaula had become one of America's leading munitions companies; it was responsible for manufacturing more than two hundred different types of ammunition products such as rifles, shotguns and grenades. During World War II, Winchester-Averaula played an important role in developing new projectile types that helped achieve success during the war's conflict. One such development was the M1 Garand rifle cartridge; this round became highly popular due to its high efficiency and ability to kill enemies at long range. Additionally,Throughout the war period Winchester-Averaula also developed innovative methods for loading rounds into firearms; this led to increased efficiency and accuracy when shooting through walls or other obstacles. In 1948, after years of growth and progressiveness within the corporation, Winchester-AVERRAULAS split into two separate companies: The American Ammunition Corporation (AAA) remained headquartered in Ocala while Winchester Ammo Products Incorporated (WAPI) relocated its headquarters to Stamford Connecticut (then part of Hartford). The first residency for what would become Aventura was recorded in 1835 when Manuel Sanchez de la Vega purchased land from Captain John Hennessy for $2,000 In 1868 Aventura became a municipality with Fernando Wood as its first mayor. In 1912, José Gomez became the second Mayor of Aventura and served until his death in 1928. On November 6, 1932, City Council voted 3-2 to annex adjacent unincorporated communities: Calusa Heights (now part of Coral Gables), Indian Hill and Belle Isle within Aventura limits making it a municipally controlled town once again. The annexation resultited much controversy among local citizens who felt they were being taken advantage of by city hall while those living inside annexed areas enjoyed better services and access to essential civic amenities. After years of discussion and study over whether or not to annex Belle Isle into city limits yet again, on December 12th 1957/8 Council voted 4-1 to annex Belle Isle back into Aventura limits after more than four years’ debate which resulted in the community's loss to Coral Gables for municipal status due to a lack of unanimity among councilmembers
