In 1892 The United States Census reported that there were 24 people living in Aventura when it was named for Mrs McDermott but no longer exists as records are missing from that era or earlier ones In 1907 Captain James Halsey recommended that during World War I airfields be built near Tampa bay due to strategic location between European Countries and American ports along this coastline offering many opportunities for aerial bombardment against enemy forces ashore US Naval Air Station (NAS) Plantation Key was constructed northeast of downtown Tampa while NAS Plantation Beach east off US 26 served as fighter training base until 1945 when it closed with all personnel(Navy & Marine) moved into NAS Farragut which became USS Enterprise (CVN 64). On April 22nd 1946 USS Enterprise departed NAS Plantation Key under tow from USS Miami (CVA 63) after being condemned as surplus military property following World War II .On May 10th 1946 Enterprise arrived at Jacksonville Landing Field located adjacent today's Everglades International Airport where she remained until her sale in 1984 to Spanish interests who converted her into a luxury hotel known today as "Aventuras Grand Hotel". Aventura, Florida is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. Aventura was founded on November 3, 1903 by American entrepreneur and citrus breeder Julius Levy. The name "Aventura" means "the white evening sky." The population of Aventura was 1,562 at the 2000 census. It is the second most populous city in Miami-Dade County and the fifteenth largest city in South Florida. In 1905 Julius Levy set up a citrus orchard near his home on Northwest 146th Street in what is now known as Aventura Beach. The first oranges were grown here in 1907 and 1908. By 1912 there were over 100 fruit trees and 300 people living here. In 1916 Levy developed what would become one of the most important areas for shopping in Miami-Dade County; he began selling groceries at 37th Terrace between Third and Fourth Streets. By 1925 he had built two stores totaling 152 feet (46 m) long by 82 feet (25 m) wide with a frontage of 144 feet (45 m). He also established a large poultry farm with 10 barns that produced more than 2 million chickens, ducks, geese, Milo's lambs, pigs, cows and other animals during their twenty years of operation. This activity led to Levy being called "The Father of Aventura". During World War II many residents made their way to work on military bases throughout southern Florida; some stayed after the war ended to establish businesses or start families. After hostilities ended many soldiers returned home to rebuild homes and begin new lives when they learned about available property opportunities in south central Miami-Dade County which had not been damaged as severely as northcentralMiami-Dade County during the war years--a process that began around 1947 whenzoners discovered oil rigs dotting South Central Broward County from Deerfield Beach throughFort Lauderdale to Pompano Beach."
