Auburndale is a small town in Collier County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,811 at the2010 census. Auburndale is part of the Gainesville-Dunedin-Estero metropolitan area. Auburndale has a long history dating back to 1836 when it was named for General James A. Auburndale who fought in the Mexican–American War and served as brigadier general in the Confederate army. In 1903, Auburndale became an incorporated village with a total population of 2,500 people. The first store in what is now Auburndale opened on Main Street on October 6, 1836 by Wm Henschel and his brother Julius Henschel. A post office was established at Auburndale on November 8, 1839. By 1845, there were 10 stores and 3 banks in town. The first school was built in 1847 by Mrs Elisha Maffitt and taught reading and writing to children from age 4 to 12 years old. Mrs Maffitt motivated her students through her own work skills which she learned while working as a seamstress for local farmers during their harvest time; after school hours she would sew curtains and bed sheets using her own hands to make ends meet while also teaching English language classes to some of her pupils between Sunday evening services at First Baptist Church across the street from her home until 6 PM Monday morning (today's elementary school building stands opposite where Mrs Maffitt's home once stood). In 1861, both sides in the American Civil War had their troops stationed along US 17 north of town; skirmishes took place here between Union soldiers under Captain John Sibley (later known as General John Custer) and Confederate forces under Lieutenant Colonel Jno Bellamy (later known as General George Armstrong Custer).
