Auburndale is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Auburndale is part of the Pensacola–Fort Walton Beach–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on US-1 just east of Interstate 10 and north of State Road 516. Auburndale was founded by Englishmen in 1821 as a small post on the Apalachicola River adjacent to present-day Escambia County. The town was named for General James Auburndale who had been wounded during the Seminole War and served as military governor of Georgia before being appointed U.S. Marshal for Florida in 1817-1819. In 1824, Auburndale became part of Gadsden County and then Escambia County when it was created from parts of both counties。 In 1825, after Indian resistance against white settlement culminated in an act which set aside 2,000 acres (800 hectares) along the Gulf Coast for Native American resettlement, General John Crayton ordered Captain George Fannin to establish a ferry service across Mobile Bay to supply American settlers with cotton goods shipments bound for Cuba and Mexico City via Tampa Bay Fannin established ferry service between Mobile Bay and Pensacola until his death in 1830 due to illness or accidents; this early transportation system facilitated large numbers of goods moving between East Tennessee Valley settlements and Spanish St Augustine during its period of growth (). After Fannin's death, local farmers began selling cotton products directly to American traders; this development led to increased competition among merchants for market share). By 1830, Auburndale had become one of the most important towns in Alabama because its location made it convenient both for export trade with Spanish St Augustine and access to riverboats operating down Mobile Bay.; however, by 1840 only about half the people living there spoke English fluently (), leading many developers to begin building new downtowns around railroad stations%. This event helped shape future downtown ideas such as shopping districts lined with high-end stores while remaining affordable housing remained an important factor in keeping Dubuque close at hand .) The growth rate slowed thereafter until 1880 when another major fire destroyed most or all downtown buildings () again forcing entrepreneurs into new Downtown Development plans (); however this time they were successful enough that current Main Street leads out onto Flagler Beach where much commercial activity now takes place despite lackadaisical infrastructure ). In 1906 A&P store closed its doors permanently damaging much nearby property (), starting what would be known as "the Great Fire era". Businesses recommenced rebuilding but never regained their former level so notable features left behind include: old city hall demolished (again), original Fourth Street Bridge gone but replaced by a modern bridge (now used as a parking lot), brick piers remain near main thoroughfare intersections throughout Historic Downtown area., unpaved streets run through core areas making driving difficult if not impossible (). However novel uses like using them as pedestrian paths have helped make up for some lacklustre architecture .)
