Auburndale is home to Lakeland University and Jubilee Christian School. Auburndale was founded in 1885 by Isaac Hale and his wife Sarah. In 1907, the town acquired its current name from Auburndale County, Alabama which then included most of what is now Polk County. The first post office in Auburndale opened on November 15, 1907. The town's first school was built in 1909 and served students up until 1941 when it became Jubilee Christian School. In 1957, the US Postal Service merged with Gulf Mail to form United States Post Office Corporation which later changed its name to USPS Corporation - National Mail Company (Namco). In 1990, Namco merged with Dow Jones & Company Incorporated to form Dow Jones & Company - Wall Street Journal (Dow JONES). In 2000, Auburndale annexed part of Plant City which had been vacant for many years due to a fire that destroyed several businesses there including a chemical plant operated by Dow Chemical Co., one of America's largest chemical companies at the time. Auburndale has a rich history dating back to 1835 when it was founded as a military post by Colonel James Wofford and his army during the Seminole Wars. The post office was established in 1836 and named for General John Auburndale, who had served with distinction in the Mexican-American War. Auburndale's first settlers were families from Georgia and North Carolina who moved to this area after the Civil War because of its strategic location on an important trade route linking Pensacola with Tampa and Jacksonville. In 1879, Auburndale became one of Florida's original 99 towns when it was incorporated as a result of a state law that authorized township formation under certain circumstances. At that time, only white males could vote in Florida; all other residents were required to attend Town Meetings which were held monthly to make decisions about such matters as fire protection and public works. The town quickly grew due to its agricultural potential and its location near railroads which made shipping goods available throughout Central Florida. By 1886, Auburndale had become one of the most prosperous communities in Volusia County with over 100 businesses operating within its walls. The continued growth of the community led to increased development around it including the erection of several homes overlooking downtown where wealthy Atlantans would vacation during summertime. In 1915, Auburndalians voted overwhelmingly in favor of annexing neighboring Sanford into the town limits; this action helped spur further growth within Auburndale and eventually lead to its incorporation into Orlando as an official city on December 3, 1931). During World War II, much activity took place within or around AubURNDALE - both military activity (such as building airfields)and civilian activities (such as manufacturing munitions).
