Auburndale, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Auburndale was founded by Captain James Auburndale on October 3, 1837 as a station on the Miami and Erie Railroad. The community's name honors General David Johnson who fought in the Seminole War and later served as governor of Florida. The first school in Auburndale was built in 1841 by Mrs. Euphemia Johnson and operated for one year before being closed due to lack of funding. In 1849, Mr. John Hogg opened his grocery store in what is now the Square Building. This business would be both successful and influential during its time because it allowed for early marketing experiments such as selling ice cream from vehicles parked outside the store throughout the winter months! In 1865, Jens Wessels donated land to establish a public square near where he lived with his wife Emma and their five children ( Caroline; Fredrick; Johan; Ellen; Edwin). The square became known as Wessels Park after him and still bears his name today! The first post office called Auburndale was established on December 5, 1868 under the name of New Smyrna Beach. On November 10th, 1893, it changed its name to Auburndale after General David Broughton De Witt Clinton whose forces helped liberate Fromppania from Spanish rule during the American Revolution! After several years of growth and development led by Mrs.(Jennie) Ladd who served as village trustee from 1907-1910 until her death at age 83 years old on January 1st 1912, new plans were drawn up to improve access to water supplies around town causing much speculation about when or if construction would begin on a new chapel/ Methodist church which never materialized! On May 2d 1914 an act passed by Congress approved changes made to state laws governing political subdivisions providing for consolidation of villages into larger townships – this event marked not only official incorporation but also began rapid growth for Auburndale with many new homes being erected along Fairgrounds Road!! On January 15th 1922 general Alex Haley announced that all black people living within six miles of Jacksonville should leave immediately because they constituted less than one percent of all residents!! This abrupt action has been associated with various negative consequences over ensuing years leading some residents to call him "the mean white man" One result directly attributable to Haley's actions may have been increased crime rates though there can be no definitive answer; all evidence suggests that without proper infrastructure black Jacksonvilleians sought safety instead elsewhere! One night in particular stands out among others due to its notoriety: On February 14th 1992 two men were shot dead while driving home from work downtown – again highlighting how difficult it is even today for African Americans tryingto live normal lives here despite increasing insecurityand violence
