In 1802, Captain John Auburndale donated land to the Town of Auburndale for a school district and courthouse. The school was built on what is now Main Street between Market and State Streets. From its inception until 1861, when it became part of Jacksonville County, Florida, the School District of Jacksonville operated as an unincorporated community within the limits of Jacksonville County that included most of modern-day Auburndale. In 1868, Jacksonville County separated into two county governments: one based in Jacksonville and one based in Tallahassee; consequently, both School Districts - including that operate today - were abolished within their respective jurisdictions but continued operation under new names until 1961 when they became part of the newly created Polk County government proper (along with much other east-central Polk County business).
