Auburndale is located on a small peninsula between Biscayne Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway. The first European to visit Auburndale was Captain John Smith in 1606 when he sailed along the coast of what is now Miami-Dade County. In 1794, Colonel James Ketchum built Fort Washington on an artificial island southeast of present-day Auburndale to protect his trading post from Seminole Indians. In 1821, American settlers arrived in what is now Broward County and founded Fort Lauderdale; Auburndale became its capital. In 1898, after Florida became a state, Auburndale became its second city. In 1903, A&P supermarket opened one of first big box stores in South Florida and began driving economic development in the community which by 1928 had over 10 shopping centers and employed over 100 people including 20 grocery clerks working out of six stores that operated on various sites throughout downtown (now known as "Old Market Square"). By 1938 there were twenty-four businesses with more than 1,000 employees and fifteen schools serving grades PreK-12 with an enrollment of 614 students; two years later a new hospital was built on land donated by Mrs. Ethel Payne for that purpose (now Miracle Mile Mall). The growth continued through World War II until then due to wartime shortages aluminum canisters which required large amounts of lime (and other materials) for manufacturing gasoline cans so industries shifted production away from town into larger cities such as Tampa or Jacksonville while Auburndale lost much OF its employment during those years; however it experienced rapid residential growth during postwar decades with many families moving into the newly developing suburbs outside town limits only to leave again once hostilities ended Today's community has evolved dramatically since then as retail strip malls have replaced downtown businesses while service industry jobs have moved back into town along US 1/2 highway providing access to Everglades National Park and assorted Cruise ship terminals making this one of most visited communities in Southwest Florida

Development around downtown began in earnest during the early 2000s when jobs started flowing into downtown from new construction near US 82/US 19 (the old St Petersburg–Clearwater Turnpike). This new housing initiative helped spur redevelopment around all aspects of downtown: artspace grew into one of SouthFlorida’s most vibrant districts; bars opened up throughout central district; restaurants sprang up all over different neighborhoods; high-end retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue moved into renovated historic buildings across central district near US 82/US 19 while still maintaining significant presence east down Pine Street towards Central Park where once stand empty lots now house popular local businesses like Baskin Robbins ice cream parlor and Live Oak BBQ restaurant One key reason for this new renaissance is that Downtown AuburndALE has become highly interactive with its surroundings – pedestrians can find plenty of activities happening right outside their door whether it be art walks or markets where locals can purchase local produce or goods from vendors set up throughout each block .
