The history of Auburndale, Florida can be traced back to the early 1800s. The area was first settled by Native Americans and then became a part of the Spanish Empire. In 1821, the United States acquired Florida from Spain and began to expand its territory. One of the earliest settlers in that area was John Auburndale, who founded a small town in what is now Auburndale. The town quickly grew and soon became a key stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1851, one of Auburndale's founders, James Kapp, donated land to build an elementary school in what is now downtown Auburndale. That same year, another founder, William Hinson, donated land for a courthouse and jail. In 1854, another founder, Isaiah Morse (brother-in-law of James Kapp), donated land for a post office and two homes. By 1870, there were six businesses in downtown Auburndale with a population of around 100 people. The late 1800s were difficult for many American towns during the time period known as the Progressive Era. Many residents wanted more access to education and campaigned for better infrastructure such as roads and schools. This led to an increase in development around downtown Auburndale; however, some people felt that it was too urbanized or noisy for their liking. During this timeperiod also saw increased crime rates in America; as result of this trend many businesses chose to move out into rural areas or smaller towns throughout the country instead of staying put in Downtown AuburndALE
Auburndale is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,924 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton–Boca Raton metropolitan area. Auburndale was founded in 1872 by Colonel John AubURNDALE and his wife Anna Maria HARTLEY as a small farming community on the banks of the Apalachicola River. The first store was built in 1875 and the first post office in 1876. In 1880, Colonel AubURNDALE donated land to build what became Town Hall Square, which became one of the most important business districts in town. In 1905, Auburndale incorporated as a village under the name "Auburn". In 1907 it changed its name to "Auburn" again and then "Auburn Heights" until it changed back to "Auburndale" in 1959 when it became an incorporated municipality with full city rights. The growth of nearby Pensacola led to increased demand for water and sewer service and development began along US 1 across from today's Town Hall Square (then known as East Main Street). This early growth led to many businesses opening up including grocery stores, dry-cleaning joints, restaurants and more services that continue today such as home repair shops. Auburn Hills Drive followed later becoming one of the busiest streets in town with several medical offices and other businesses located there including two banks (First National Bank & Trust Company & Citizens Bank) before terminating at US 1 just south of today's Park View Mall complex where Interstate 10 ends providing access to both Pensacola and Destin . Today Auburn Hills Drive remains one ofreething specialities in town with several high end boutiques/restaurants dotting its length while several smaller businesses keep things open like convenience stores or hair salons

Auburndale is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton Beach metropolitan area. The name Auburndale comes from an early settler named Aubrey and a county name by which it was also known, Auburneaux. The first white person to live in what is now Auburndale was William Bradford in 1824. In 1830, Ebenezer Beecher moved to what is now Auburndale from Jacksonville with his family and began farming. A store and post office were established in 1833 by John Witherspoon on the southeast corner of Third Street and First Avenue (now Fourth Street). In 1837, JnoBaptist Harker purchased land east of present-day Auburndale from James Polk for $6,000. He built a log cabin there called "Harker's Cabin". In 1840 he married Miss Nancy Stephenson there and they started a farmstead that became known as Harker's Mill after him. Mrs Harker died suddenly in 1849 when her son William Ewing took over their farmstead; he never completed it due to illness before his death in 1911 aged 82 years old. In 1850 James Vanderbilt bought 400 acres (16 km²) south of present-day Auburndale for $2 per acre from Ebenezer Beecher; this land became Vanderbilt Park after he donated it to the state of Florida as part of the Homestead law administered by the Department of Agriculture during Reconstruction era In 1865 David Ligon bought 640 acres (248 hectares) northeast of present-day Auburndale for $3 per acre from Augustus Stroud who had acquired it through purchase under the Indian Removal Act ; this land became Ligon Park after him . Ligon Park served as education ground for many students attending Escambia County schools until its closure in 1978 due to budget cuts . For many years prior to its closing down, Ligon Park has been home tottes manufacturing company operated out of an old sawmill on US Highway 98 near milepost 6 within walking distance of downtown streetscape . After decadeslong campaign led by local historian Dr Donnie Atkinson among others, former Mayor Rick Alterio restored much deteriorated one story frame building associated with manufacturing activities at former mill site which reopened shop-in-shop operations Dec 12th 2009 !
