In 1923, Auburndale became a city under the name of Sanford after its incorporation as an unincorporated village within the town limits of Kissimmee; it had been called Sanford since 1798 when Spanish explorers discovered this area during their expedition known as La Florida (The Florida). In 1960, Auburndale annexed portions of neighboring Winter Garden to form a new city with a population then estimated at 15,000 people (15% of which was growth due to annexation from Winter Garden). In 1972, an effort to annex all or most of Ybor City failed when pro- annexation groups argued that certain features such as public libraries would be lost if Ybor were annexed into Auburndale proper rather than become one municipality with its own library system

Auburndale, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States located on the St. Johns River. The population was 1,859 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Auburndale was founded in 1837 by Captain James Auld and his wife Jane Auld as a trading post on the site of present day Auburndale Lake. The community was named for Colonel John Auburndale who had commanded two American expeditions against Spanish forces in 1794-95 and 1796-97 and had been one of the first U.S. citizens to settle in Florida after being naturalized as an American citizen in 1798. In 1840, Captain Auld's son Alexander built what is now known as Alexander House which served as headquarters for several years before becoming home to a Methodist church until it burned down in 1847; this event helped begin what would become a lasting relationship between Methodists and residents of Auburndale. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E Lee felt that he needed safe passage through Union territory so he sent an army overland from nearby Jacksonville to attack Fort Sumter; when Union General George McClellan blocksaded Confederate ports along the Alabama coast he ordered Admiral David Dixon Porter to storm Fernandina Beach (just south of where Auburndale stands) without warning or opportunity for surrender and capture any prisoners or supplies - one such raid led to the death of over 100 sailors and Marines including Commodore Samuel Eliot Morison's flagship USS Constitution . This action finally ended the war within days and allowed President Abraham Lincoln to Stevens Island off Tampa Bay with all its military equipment safely stored there - this major victory created new economic opportunities for both Jacksonville and Auburndale while also demonstrating Ulysses S Grant's power as Commander-in-Chief during Reconstruction period across America Allied forces landed at NAS Pensacola on December 10th, 1941 aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 74) under Naval Forces Europe Command Commander Rear Admiral Chester Wylie Smith Jr., who reported "We have successfully accomplished our mission" NAS Pensacola became Naval Air Station Jacksonville following World War II when airfields were added alongwith other naval installations throughout Florida The population has grown steadily since 2000 with a median age of 36 years old ± 2 years . The percentage male/female ratio is approximately 51%/49%. African Americans make up 14% ± 3% of total population while Hispanics comprise 7% ± 2%
