Auburndale's history can be traced back to 1892 when James Auburndale and his wife Anna moved from Illinois to what is now Auburndale, Florida in order to start a new life with their children. In 1898 James died suddenly while on vacation in Europe; his widow Anna took care of their children until they were both age 21 years old. After James' death, Anna sold her farm near Clearwater and moved her family to what is now Auburndale so that they could continue farming and raise their additional six children there. The first school in what is now Auburndale was built by Mrs. Joice Cobb in 1901. That same year also saw the opening of the first store in what is now Auburndale - Mrs. Cobb's store was the only business open at that time within reach for many residents of the small town adjacent to Tampa Bay! In 1911 Mr. John Ladd opened up his first grocery store which soon became one of the most popular stores within miles of where it sat today! In 1951 the original post office building was constructed on land that still sits across from present day Middle School (now known as North Middle School). This building served as Post Office for both Town Hall meetings as well as mail deliveries for residents throughout much of early 21st century! The growth of agriculture during this time led to more buildings being needed including a church (First Baptist) in 1957 followed by an addition to Schools (Secondary School) in 1961 followed by another elementary school (Third Grade) in 1967 - these additions helped spur growth within Town Hall which eventually reached its current size!
