Atlantic Beach is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Atlantic Beach's history dates back to 1892 when it was known as "Beachwood". In 1922, it became a city and in 1959, it became a county seat. The first settlers arrived in 1892 from Ireland with the intention of establishing friendly relations with the natives. soon after they built their homes on Point Loma Light Station beachfront and named their community "Beachwood" for its secluded location near Clearwater Harbor on Biscayne Bay. By 1902, most of the original settlers had died from fever or shipwrecked onaha (now Key Biscayne). A few others moved into what is now Atlantic Beach in 1916 when they were given land east of US-1 by then-Governor Manuel López de Santa Anna for use as an airport and military airfield during World War I. From 1916 until 1926, all aircraft operations were conducted out of this airfield which also included taxiways and runways leading to two small lakes that served as landing/takeoff pads for both fighters and bombers operating from this base including Army Air Forces training flights during World War II; many important aviation events occurred here including nonstop ferry flights between Miami International Airport and Tampa Army Air Field (now Tampa Bay Regional Airport) that paralleled Army convoy movements across Central America; among these notable flying events were emergency landings by Consolidated PBY Catalina pilots during Hurricane Hugo making landfall over Ft Myers Island on September 24th 1944; three days later Hurricane Irma hit Cuba causing more than $30 million worth damage which destroyed many homes along much of southFlorida’s East coast; federal disaster relief was activated shortly afterwards followed by state response which included Mud season 1946 according to some sources - both local news reports at that time indicate significant flooding did occur but no definitive evidence exists to support such claims In 1961, following annexation by Miami-Dade County, "Beachwood" officially changed its name to "Atlantic Beech." As one result of this change in name only about 10% of original beachfront lots still remain within Atlantic Beech boundaries today while nearly all development has taken place within newly annexed areas east off US 1 called MidtownMiami or DowntownMiami proper - resulting in much increased traffic congestion along busy streets like Cuyama Boulevard adjacent to Flagler Street - home to numerous high end boutiques/resorts etc.; increasing social media usage has made traditional open access beaches like Sandy Hook Naval Base less desirable due to potential photo opportunities opening up closeby Karst Lakes National Park etc., further impacting natural habitats & resources along side highly developed neighborhoods / suburbs adjoining downtownMiami while directly affecting residents' quality of life & enjoyment thereof?
