Atlantic Beach, Florida is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 452 as of the 2010 census. Atlantic Beach is located on the beach between Biscayne Bay and the Everglades. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The history of Atlantic Beach can be traced back to 1875 when brother and sister James and Fannie Mandrell bought property on Biscayne Boulevard in what is now known as Atlantic Beach. The Mandrells ran a ferry service from their estate across Biscayne Bay to their nearby summer home at Eleven Mile Key until 1958 when they sold it to real estate developer Arthur Ashe for $1 million. Ashe turned it into an upscale shopping and vacation spot with residents including first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, singer Ray Charles, actor Ronald Reagan, former President George H.W. Bush and his wife BarbaraBush among others. In 1970 he donated the land adjacent to his house at Six Mile Key for use as a National Park Service refuge for migratory bird species after Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of southeast Cuba during that year's storm surge event there which also caused extensive damage in much of south Miami-Dade County including Atlantic Beach In 1978 Atlantik Industries Inc., headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, merged with American Tobacco Company (ATC) to form Philip Morris International (PMI). As part of this merger ATC began offering cigarettes called "Marlin" which were modeled after Phillip Morris cigarettes but made without nicotine or propylene glycol which gave them a lower price point for smokers who wanted something without toxins found in other cigarettes such as Marlboro Man, Winston Churchill and filter tips that could cause cancer or respiratory problems In 1984 PMI announced plans to build its largest factory ever outside of North America outside Memphis Tennessee where it would produce box cutters under the brand name "Lizard". The factory would employ 1,500 people and would become one of PMI's most prominent symbols both inside and outside its corporate headquarters After years of planning construction began on Lizards' home country plant near small town Chillicothe Ohio in 1990 before finally completing it in 2000 The plant closed down due to low sales rates following some negative publicity surrounding health concerns related to smoking cigars while working inside its massive building citing exposure from asbestos fibers found throughout the facility . Afterward community groups started working together with local elected officials (including then Mayor Leon Yearwood)and state legislators (then Senator Rick Lazio)to try revive interest in Lizards by developing new marketing strategies such as creating art galleries inside the plant or hosting exhibits about how jobs lost at Lizards led directly to joblessness throughout central Ohio . However no success was found despite several investigations On July 20th 2009 PMI announced that production had restarted at its Chillicothe OH site but only using smaller amounts of tobacco products per day than before because larger quantities could not be manufactured due production costs had increased so much since Lizards shutdown
Atlantic Beach is a barrier island located on the Gulf of Mexico between Pensacola, Florida and Mobile, Alabama. It was originally settled by European Americans in the 1840s as part of a campaign to secure markets for their exports. The area now known as Atlantic Beach was first inhabited by the Timucua Indians. The first Spanish settler in what is now Atlantic Beach was José Joaquín de la Torre who arrived in 1819. In 1849, General Antonio López de Santa Anna landed at what is now Atlantic Beach and proclaimed himself Governor of Florida. He built his home here and it remains one of the few structures remaining from this period in local history. The first post office on the island was called Pensacola and opened on December 6, 1851. It served residents of both Pensacola and Mobile until 1865 when it moved to Mobile and remained there until its closure on April 1, 1898. In 1895, an act became law providing for annexation of parts of Baldwin County (the then unincorporated community near present-day Fort Myers) into Miami-Dade County so that more people could be brought under one government body. This led to the development of what is now Atlantic Beach as well as other adjacent communities including Boca Raton, Fort Myers, Key West, Tampa Bay Area and Pompano Beach. In 1935, during World War II, many men worked at sea aboard ships building submarines off the coast of Jacksonville before return home to America once hostilities had ended; most took up fishing after the war ended because no new submarines were being built at that time . Some old subs still moored here off shore today are used for tourist tours.. Many people who worked on those boats also lived here later in their lives either through moving out or buying homes hereabouts during those early decades following World War II
