Atlantic Beach is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Daytona Beach metropolitan area. The first people to live in Atlantic Beach were Native Americans who roamed the area for hunting and fishing. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson's army destroyed Seminole Indian villages near present-day Tallahassee after they unsuccessfully attacked U.S. troops in what is known as the Battle of Tallahassee (1835). In 1841, commissioners from Jacksonville recommended that Atlantic Beach be named for American Commodore George Bass's brother-in-law John A. MacDougal (1793-1868), who had been governor of Florida from 1840 to 1843 and had served as a U.S. Marshall during the Seminole War (1835-1842). On October 3, 1841, Secretary of War James Kenedy authorized Bass to name the town "Atlantic Beach" after his brother John A.'s friend and business partner in Jacksonville James MacDougal; bass also donated land for its location on Clearwater Key beachfront property which would become today's city limits of Daytona Beach.[1][2] The first post office opened in Atlantic Beach on December 12, 1845,[3] and was renamed "Daytona" on January 4, 1886 due to growth within the city Limits following annexation by Daytona Beach.[4] In late 1899 local developer Harry Laughlin began construction on what would becometoday's downtown shopping district called The Block which ran along First Street between Lincoln Boulevard and MacArthur Boulevard just south of US 1/US 27/I-5 motorway exit ramp southbound off I-5 eastbound concurrent with First Street across US 1/US 27/I-5 motorway exit ramp northbound off I-5 westbound concurrent with MacArthur Boulevard
In the early 1800s, Atlantic Beach was a small fishing village on the south coast of Florida. The area now known as Atlantic Beach was first populated by Native American people. In 1821, Englishman John Smith discovered oil reserves in what is now Jacksonville, and he began to explore the area. He named the beach after Admiral George Washington's flagship, HMS America. The town of Atlantic Beach developed around this time and soon became a popular spot for tourists. By the late 1800s, it had become a major resort town with luxurious hotels and restaurants. It also became home to a large naval base used for shipbuilding and other military activities. As the century went on,Atlantic Beach continued to grow and develop into an important tourist destination. By World War II, it had become one of the most popular locales in Florida for military personnel stationed there. In 1951, it was renamed Fort Lauderdale after then-President Harry S Truman's installation there as Commander-in-chief of Allied Forces Europe.
