Atlantic Beach, Florida is a secluded town in theulla of Miami-Dade County, Florida. It was first settled by American colonists in 1836. The town's name comes from an area of the shoreline that extended to both Atlantic and Bay Bluffs rivers. The current community was founded on August 27, 1899 by brothers John and Wanda Hynes. The town quickly grew due to its location near two major shipping routes: the citrus industry on bay front property and land used for cattle farming on the inland side of Bay Bluffs river. By 1920, Atlantic Beach had a population of 2,500 people and it had developed into a small commercial center with several hotels and stores. In 1965, the United States Postal Service relocated its main post office from Maitland to Atlantic Beach after decades of being located in Hollywood Heights. In 1990, the town became part of Miami-Dade County when it was created as part of the adjustment following Hurricane Andrew which caused extensive damage throughout much of south Dade County.
The first Europeans to visit the area were Portuguese sailors in 1565. In 1655, Englishman John Hawkins discovered an extensive group of islands, including what is today Atlantic Beach, in the Bahamas. The area was soon filled with Spanish colonists and by 1763, the Spanish had established a small town on the beach. The town was abandoned in 1802 after a hurricane destroyed much of Nassau County. In 1814, American Commodore James Cook sailed into the area and discovered what would become known as "Cook's Sound" (later known as Garden Key). He named it for Admiral James Cook who had explored it earlier that year. The sound was later used by American naval vessels to anchor off both Florida Keys and Key West during their visits to that region. The first landings by Americans occurred when Privateer Captain John Sutter landed his ship at Garden Key on 11 October 1861. He claimed possession of all of north-central Florida except for Jacksonville which was then part of Spain. On 4 December 1861, Ulysses S. Grant became President of the United States after defeating George Washington in a presidential election contest; he designated Flagler County as part of East Florida Territory which included most of today's Jacksonville and its adjacent counties (and parts of Miami-Dade and Hillsborough Counties). On 12 December 1861, Commodore Perry arrived at nearby Little Havana on Cuba's eastern coast with his fleet in order to attempt an invasion of Cuba from that side; he encountered no resistance when he reached Guantanamo Bay on 1 January 1862 but found little food or water available there so withdrew two days later without having accomplished anything more than touching Cuban soil. In April 1862 Perry attempted another invasion from this side but found only hostile locals waiting for him at Las Tunas Island before withdrawing again without reaching any objectives other than embarrassing America further internationally. In 1865 General Andrew Johnson assumed office as President due to Abraham Lincoln's assassination; within six months Johnson had ordered Perry withdrawn from Cuba and moved inland where he founded Fort Pierce on 30 April 1865 just south of present-day Tampa Bay
