However, some businesses have managed to keep up with changes in tastes over time; one example is Joe's Crab Shack which has been open since 1973 in what used to be an ammunition store/museum complex on Main Street.

In 1675, Captain John Smith discovered fresh water sources at Atlantic Beach and began developing the area into a trading post. He named this spot “New Smyrna” after his home town in Wales. By 1704, New Smyrna had become one of Britain’s most important trading posts because of its location near where goods could be shipped directly to Europe without having to go through America or Africa. In 1835, following Mexico's victory over France in War of 1836, American settlers began moving into what is now Florida from across North America looking for new opportunities. One group decided to move downriver towards Jacksonville because it seemed like there would be more opportunity there than anywhere else in Florida
