All of Atlantic Beach, Florida was once a bustling ammunition manufacturing and storage center. The town was founded in 1881 by Colonel John A. Stroud, who was the first president of the National Ammunition Company. The company manufactured arms and munitions for both military and sporting purposes until it went bankrupt in 1912. However, the history of ammunition continues to be deeply entrenched in the community. In 1935, the Atlantic Beach Chamber of Commerce formed an organization called "The American Rifleman" to promote shooting and rifle use throughout the area. This group eventually became known as "American Ammo". Today, Atlantic Beach has a rich history with Ammunition Manufacturing Company still active today making various types of ammo including: shot shells, rifle rounds and shotgun rounds. In 1927, the Boardwalk was completed and became one of Atlantic Beach's defining features. The Boardwalk was used as an open-air stage for concerts, village meetings, fishing tournaments, dances and other events throughout its years of use. In 1969 it was replaced by what is now called "The Pier". In 1970 dredging began on what is now known as "The Bay" which would add over 2 miles (3 km) to the length of the beach front promenade running parallel to North Pointe Boulevard between Washington Avenue and Northwest 6th Street. As part of this project, dredged material were put into channels that resulted in increased erosion along both shores of The Bay - making it difficult for pedestrians and bicyclists access both sides at once. Despite these difficulties, visitors continue to flock to The Bay each year for activities such as swimming; sunbathing; windsurfing; kayaking; etc.. Accordingly, much has changed since 1970 when all but one pier opened – then closed due mainlyto weather conditions (such as hurricanes). However many aspects have stayed relatively same including scenic overlooks overlooking The Bay; beautiful architecture from century old homes dating back to 1923; delicious seafood available at local restaurants such as Joe's Crab Shack & Lobster Shack; large parking lots with plenty of space for cars and buses;idiomatic service from storeowners who have been here since before there were stores hereabouts...and much more!
