The town of Atlantic Beach, Florida is located in the Miami-Dade County area of South Florida. The population of the town was estimated to be over 100,000 as of 2010. The town is known for its beautiful beaches and its history. The first people who set foot on what is now Atlantic Beach were Native American traders and missionaries. In 1824, General James Wilkinson erected a fort at what is now known as Point Breeze. At this time, the beach was called "Walking Bay". In 1892, Captain John A. Stroud built a small steamboat wharf on the east side of the bay which became known as "Stroud's Wharf". This wharf helped bring in goods and passengers to and from nearby Miami. In 1903, Captain John A. Stroud donated land to create a public beach that would stretch along State Road 95 from Point Breeze to Fort Lauderdale (later Broward County). The name "Atlantic Beach" was given to this new beach by Mrs. Jensie Purdy, an early settler in the area. During World War II, many residents decamped for lack of housing in North Miami or downtown Miami during the bleak days before Pearl Harbor. They moved back into their homes when war ended and began enjoying life again around Atlantic Beach proper . One unique aspect about living near Atlantic Beach during wartime was that there were no blackout times; all residents were required by law to remain awake during night military exercises taking place offshore off our coast! It must have been quite some challenge trying not only stay up but keep your head down while warships pounded shoreline with cannons! Afterward there were more restrictions placed on open water swimming which I'm sure didn't help reduce injuries sustained during those years... either way it didn't stop us from having lots of fun!

The first European to set foot on the Atlantic coast of Florida was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1513. The area that is now known as Atlantic Beach was first inhabited by Native Americans, who were hunters and gatherers. In 1614, Englishman John Hawkins discovered a passage to the Caribbean through what is now Key West. This allowed for settlement of the area by Englishmen and their Indian slaves, who began using this access for trading goods with Spain and other parts of the world. In 1821, Captain James Cook explored the Florida Keys and named them after Captain George Fenton Carrick, an officer on HMS Beagle. When it was realized that there would be no more ships sailing from England to visit these keys because of piracy problems in the Caribbean, Spanish settlers arrived in large numbers to take advantage of this new trade opportunity. As a result, some land around here became part of what is now Miami-Dade County. In 1912, President Woodrow Wilson visited Atlantic Beach and dedicated a park in its honor at Point Comfort Harbor near present-day Broward Boulevard. This event marked the beginning of a long cultural relationship between America and Cuba which continued until Fidel Castro took over power in 1959.
