Apopka, Florida is a small town in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando metropolitan area. The town was founded on October 11, 1892 by George Hargrave and his wife Mabel after they were driving from Jacksonville to Daytona Beach when they saw a white postcard with the name Apopka on it. They decided to make the stop and built their first house there. In 1905, Apopka incorporated as a borough. On November 3, 1958, it became a city under an amendment to the Florida Constitution approved by voters in a referendum. The amendment granted city status to any municipality that had a population of over 10,000 people within two years after its incorporation and met certain other requirements including having an elected mayor and City Council members who could pass ordinances dealing with public safety and zoning issues; being financially solvent; selling property tax exempt; or contributions from residents or businesses equal in value to one-half of one percent (1/2%) of its total assessed valuation (less any unincorporated areas). In 1970 Apopka annexed land from neighbouring towns of Ocoee and Winter Garden for economic development purposes but never developed it because of opposition from those towns' leaders who felt that annexation would have taken away their village character
