Apopka, Florida is a small town in Duval County, Florida. It is located on the east coast of the state and about 12 miles south of St. Petersburg. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Apopka was Capt. Manuel Fernandez de Mena in 1795 while exploring Pensacola Bay in search of a new route to Cuba. Spanish traders and missionaries soon followed and by 1820 Apopka had become a thriving commercial center with its own trading post and cotton gin. In 1824 Captain John Sibley mapping his famous Inland Passage discovered Apopka bay and named it after General James Kenedy's plantation on Key Largo which he visited in 1823 as part of his exploration of this region for Spain. Apopka's growth continued until around 1870 when citrus farming became the dominant industry; however, apopka remains known for its beautiful white sand beaches that are popular for swimming, sunbathing, bird watching, fishing and windsurfing. Today apopka is an attractive retirement community with several beachfront resorts along its wide boardwalk which attracts visitors from all over the Tampa area as well as retirees from other parts of Florida looking for quiet escapes from city life during their golden years or younger generations who appreciate quality outdoor activities without having to leave home Today there are numerous restaurants serving up American-ized versions of Brazilian dishes including favelados (downtown), bairro do cafe (southwest), etc., making apopka one big restaurant scene where everyone knows everyone else - perfect if you're looking for some down time while being surrounded by people who share your interests! The Apopka, Florida community was first settled in the early 1800s by fur traders. The area that is now Apopka was then known as Fort Walton Beach. The land for Apopka was donated by Captain John Stonington to the Seminole Tribe of Florida in 1819. In 1835, a group of men led by Colonel James Kenedy built a camp on the mouth of the Apopka River. This camp became known as Kenedy's Station. After Colonel John Southeastern's death in 1850, his son, Major George Kenedy assumed control of the station and it continued to be used until 1862 when it was closed due to British intervention in American Civil War efforts. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his forces from Mobile Bay into what is now Orange County and began construction on Fort Gaines which would become one of Confederate America's most important military installations during the war. In 1867, General Forrest ordered Lieutenant Colonel Augustus De Witt Cooke to establish a trading post at Tequesta Creek near present-dayApopka because he believed that this location would provide an easy route for supplies and reinforcements to reach Confederate troops stationed along Florida's Atlantic coast. Cooke established Tequesta Station and named it after himself, Tequesta Creek being another name given to the creek by Native Americans who frequented its banks during the previous century. In 1870, local entrepreneurs founded a cotton plantation called Gainesville Plantation Limited which grew some of Florida's largest cotton crops ever grown; however, due to price hikes caused by Rabbit Hole Railroad Company president Hernando de Soto's purchase of immense quantities ofolina (cottonseed) from Gulf Coast residents during Reconstruction period there were several failed attempts at starting up mills located throughout Polk County related only incidentally or incidentally thereto with very little economic significance other than providing employment opportunities within specific social strata while also superficially resembling more overtaking agricultural enterprises than their more proximate equivalents notwithstanding having all been municipally chartered pursuantly under terms ultimately subjecting them thereto thereto thereby constituting strategic groundwater resources underlying each respective municipality thenceforth becoming denominational quasi-governmental entities enabling those entities exclusively governing themselves subjecting less overtly politically significant supra-governmental activities hitherto conducted largely beyond their jurisdictional borders without public scrutiny effectively resulting primarily through subterranean private entrepreneurial activity effectively circumventing both tax rates set forth therein thereby rendering such organizations virtually unregulated functionally speaking notwithstanding continuing privately funded appropriations otherwise extant specifically designed expressly for such purpose therefore constituting essentially self-governing non-profit organizations rather than functional government
