The earliest residents of Apopka were Native American Creek Indians. In 1868, three men, led by General David Dixon, trekked down the Apache Trail from Fort Brooke into Indian Territory to find land for white people. They met some Seminole Indians who told them about an area where they could live without fear of retribution from the Seminoles. Dixon and his men decided to settle in this area and named their new town after one of their leaders, Colonel James Wofford's brother-in-law George Walton apogee (1786-1871). Dixon's group had only 20 acres when they arrived in Apopka but soon began developing their business acumen as businessmen. By 1870, they had built a store and started selling goods such as flour, cattle and other items. A post office was established that year and soon became known as "the Place Where People Grew Up." In 1872, General George Armstrong Custer fought at Little Bighorn during the Battle of Gettysburg and died Helmetless near what is now called Chickasha Road. This event helped spur development around Custer Park in downtownApopka which still features murals commemorating Custer's life and death. During World War II, local men worked on various military sites across Florida including Fort Myers (then called Monroe), Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (now part of command center Kennedy Space Center)and Plantation Key Largo Naval Base outside Miami Beach. Many of these employees stayed after the war ended to found businesses or start families here postwar.
