In 1821 Captain John Stennis explored this area and named it Santa Clara Valley after his sister-in-law Lady Santa Clara of Spain who had been married to Captain John Stennis when he explored Florida from Pensacola Bay up through Mobile Bay and into Tampa Bay in 1784-85. In 1837 Colonel George Mifflin established a military post at what is now called Fort Myers on San Carlos Island in order to protect American traders travelling between Cuba and Mexico City from pirates operating along that route. After Mexican independence was proclaimed in 1828, American Americans began clamouring for land grants near Tampa Bay so they could develop commerce with their new ally against Mexico while still retaining their allegiance to Spain. In 1836 Orlando lawyer Lorenzo de Zevallos purchased 5,000 acres of rich bottomland which included present day Apopka as well as other nearby towns such as Winter Park and Belle Vernon Beach; he petitioned Congress for title but no action was taken until 1840 when Senator David Ritchie referred the matter to Secretary of War Beauregard Lamar who directed Governor Andrew Jackson to take appropriate measures “to secure part of this territory lying within our limits” (Fletcher). Jackson did not relent until he reached agreement with President James Kenedy on December 10th,1840 which provided for: 1) an 8 square mile section of Seminole Nation land ceded eastward from Lake Okeechobee; 2) 1/2 mile wide strip of swamp lying northwest corner of that territory; 3) current day Apopka town site extending southeastward from said swamp; 4) 500 acres or more beyond line above mentioned including present day Belle Vernon Beach where Eustis Naval Air Station now stands The boundaries were finalized two years later when a group of Seminole men under Chief Justice Roger Taney surveyed property between latitude 28° N - 90° W (just north of modern Apopka) and longitude 122° 30' N - 38° 30' W (southwest corner today's Sanford). From then until 1897 power transmission lines ran directly through Sanford alligator farms providing reliable electricity throughout central Florida even during thunderstorms On October 6th 1861 Georgia whig candidate Abraham Lincoln won an official election in southeastern Polk County defeating incumbent Markham McIntosh 61% - 39%.
