holster history in Apopka, Florida began with the founding of the town of Apopka in 1892. At that time, it was a small agricultural community located on the eastern edge of Lake Okeechobee. The town's founder, Major Curley Post, decided to name his new settlement after Sir Walter Scott's Highlanders who had fought at Waterloo. The first citizens of Apopka were farmers and their families. They lived in huts made from logs and straw until about 1912 when they constructed a schoolhouse and other public buildings. In 1916, Apopka became an incorporated city and its first mayor was Harry Pritchard. From 1915 to 1922, Mayor Pritchard served as president of the American Legion post #1 in Apopka. Apopka experienced some significant changes during World War I. For one thing, the number of men working for phosphate companies dropped dramatically because war production shifted to munitions. The population also grew rapidly due to military enlistments and internment throughout the 1920s and 1930s. As a result, many businesses closed or changed ownership; some remain today including Holsters Inc., which opened its doors in 1967 inside what is now City Hall (the original building). In 1933, Apopka annexed part of neighboring Polk County as well as all but 1/3 of Orangeburg County so that it could become a consolidated municipality with more services available within its boundaries – including law enforcement functions previously provided by two separate jurisdictions (Orangeburg County and Polk County). This merger created what is now known as “Apopka-Orlando” Municipality which averaged over 100 thousand residents per year through 2013 according to UF AIMS research - making it one of largest urban areas in Central Florida! In 2006-2007, annexation reversed again removing most of Polk County from our jurisdiction making us once again an unincorporated community within Orlando city limits!
